'share with...' specific people aren't listed

Well I did it the other way around. That is, I knew her username and password on her computer and I made an account with the exact same details on mine. We both just have windows firewall. Mine was turned off to avoid complications while trying to get the network working. She had previously told me that hers was off too, but we just checked and it turns out it was on. We turned it off.

I just shared a folder with her, and it showed up on her computer. But when she tried to open the folder it said that she doesn't have permission.

Open up her Network and Sharing Center

Under "View your Active networks"
Do you see a House, Park Bench, or like a Skyrise...

House is the one you want...

A firewall will also cause compuers not to show up in the network map as well so be careful with that

what is your internet firewall called?

As I said, the files/folders being shared are not accessible to her even though they are now visible from her computer. Now even when I choose 'share with everyone' she cannot access them. Previously she could access them when I chose 'share with everyone', so now the situation is worse rather than better.

EDIT: Just saw your latest post, will respond soon

It sounds like you are talking about Windows 7. I am the only one on Windows 7. She is on XP SP3.

We are both just using the Windows Firewall that comes with the OS. Both are turned off.

I really appreciate it, but as I've never used remote desktop and don't know how it works, I don't feel comfortable giving any control to anyone.

Thank you so much for the offer though. :) I really do appreciate it.

your not going to give me any control... your going to give me a view of your desktop.... and then i will see what your doing and then monitor and type what you are going to do... you only give me contorl when you want me to have it... usually i dont need control.... i rather you learn thenf or me to do it for you anyways *lol*

as you pull up your settings, i can see them and correct them if i have too.

If you go into MSN Messenger... you can do it that way...its very easy... I was helping a guy out in russia... we finally narrowed it down that his router was a peice of crap

with all due respect, without seeing pictures and things like that of your settings, its very hard to tell....

so lets see...

can you give us a photo of your Users on your computer, a photo of your firewall settings, Photo of your IPconfig /all settings.. i need to know how you have your computer set up, and a photo of your network map please.

Even Experts needs help *lol*

I was helping out this guy through Remote Desktop.
I went through his Windows 7 and made sure that his windows 7 settings was perfect.

1) Confirmed his router.

2) Confirmed his workgroup and advance settings.

3) He is placed in the Home group

4) I pinged the windows xp computer and got a perfect response.

5) He *windows 7 computer* cannot see the computer in the network but if he puts \\*computer name* it will pull up that way and have full access to the shared folders

6) when he goes over to the windows xp, the computer is saying there is no network access to *windows 7* compuer

7) Both firewalls were turned off...

I am just baffled.

Windows 7 computer is: 10.1.1.10
Windows XP computer is: 10.1.1.11

that way you can ping and both his computers are in a static group.

I can now get into my win 7 machine's shared folders by typing \\computer in the address bar on the xp machine. Not sure why that changed. I still cannot see the win7 machine under "view workgroup computers". If I share with everyone via the win7 machine, I can see the file/folder on the xp machine, but if I choose share with *xp user*, the folder or file is visible from the xp machine but not accessible. The icon next to the username of the xp account has a red circle with a white cross in it in the sharing permissions tab.

Now there is no longer a cross next to the xp account name in any of the sharing properties tabs, but the files are still not accessible from the xp machine.

So you want to just create and share files between the two machine? I don't know how deep you are in with workgroup/homegroup and the likes, but if you are not in deep. Refer tut (File Sharing) in my sig and see if it can help a lil.

No. There are four machines on the network. Three are xp. Getting one of the xp machines working with the win7 machine would be a good start, so I'm focussing on that at the moment.

If I only wanted to share between the two computers, I would just put a password on my computer and give it only to my girlfriend. However, I want to share files and my printer with the other computers, but I want to be able to pick and choose which files are shared with whom.

I'm not superknowledgable in groups, but in Local Users and Groups, you create certain groups whereby you can apply certain permission to these groups and have them applied to the folder permissions.

So if you want say Group A to only have Full access to Folder A, or have access to Folder A with Read only permission etc.
