Basically I have a Vista laptop sharing a folder on the network, I shared this folder by doing the following:

- Right clicked folder > properties > sharing tab > advanced sharing > ticked share this folder > permissions > then gave "everyone" read only permissions

At first this wouldn't share the folder over the network, I had to then go to the folders security tab within properties and add "everyone" to the list of users then give the permissions there.

Now after doing this same exact process from my Windows 7 folder the Vista laptop can successfully access the folder with the permissions set in the security tab.

But, when I do this for a folder on the Vista laptop the Windows 7 folder CANNOT access this folder, I tried accessing it from an android device (HTC Desire HD) using ES file explorer and it CAN access the Vista folder...

Is this an OS problem or?

Help is very much appreciated...

Can win7 see the vista shared folder? Can win7 access any shared folder on vista machine? Can win7 access any shared folder on other machines?

What did you type in ES file explorer to access vista share (something like smb://vistamachine/sharedfoldername )

The windows 7 cannot access the vista machine, the error about permissions appears.

On ES File explorer i click LAN and the laptop IP addresses appear and I can click on each system and see the folders o.k.

So ES file explorer uses ip-address. It doesn't use DNS.

What is ip address of win7 machine, what is ip address of vista?

Post screenshot of errormessage please.

Open win7 file explorer (the normal explorer you use to browse folders):
In address bar type:

\\127.0.0.1 (do you see shares of this machine? Doubleclick shows content?)
\\ipaddressofwin7 (do you see shares of win7? Doubleclick shows content?)
\\ipaddressofvista (do you see shares of vista? Doubleclick shows content?)

"the specific network provider name is invalid". It think it's a DNS issue.

on win7 and vista in command prompt:
Code:
ping cimadomal
ping josh-laptop

if it gives 4 sent, 4 received that's okay.

Sure they ping each other by name (not by ip address) without problems?

No idea yet what is wrong. Did it work before? How long do you have this problem? Did you install something related?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\HwOrder
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order

Those registry keys have name ProviderOrder in the pane to the right. It its value: RDPNP,LanmanWorkstation, webclient ??
