sharing folders (not using homegroups)

You are connected wired on win7? If so go to "network centre"->change adapter settings". Right click your lan adapter->properties. Post output

i am connected via wireless on both machines

Are you running win7 in a virtual machine adn having the problem in the virtual machine?
Disable COMODO temporary (especially firewall) on win7 and test again.
