I have a new Windows 7 PC on my network. All the other PCs on the network are Windows XP.

I have created the network as a "Work" network (not a home network)., In the Advanced Sharing Settings for the Work network, "Turn on network discovery" is checked. "Turn on file and printer sharing" is checked, "Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the public folders" is checked and "Turn off password protected sharing" is checked.

Here's my problem:

I created a share for a drive on the Windows 7 PC. Now the Windows XP machines can see the drive and the entire list of folders on the drive, but when I click on any folder, I get a popup that says

" [Folder Name] is not accessible. Access is denied. "

I have checked the double-checked the settings. Everyone has full control, and the XP machines can see the entire folder tree, but access to individual files and folders is denied.

I thought permissions from the root were supposed to be automatically inherited. What's wrong?

Thanks very much for any information.

Check Password Sharing and give the User on the 7 PC a password.

Thanks for your reply. All users on both Windows 7 and Windows XP have the same password. Any other ideas would be most appreciated.

Sharing permissions is one part of the problem, the other part is that you need to go into the Security Tab and allow access for Everyone there as well....Link below explains more. :)

Turn on Password Protected Sharing. Then you will be asked to login to the other computer by username and password.

You also have to manually share something on all computers.

Really I run 2 7 computer and many XP computers and one Mac and have no problems connecting to and access all files on all computers for any other computer. Even from Virtual Machines on multiple computer running all flavors of Linux and Windows.
