Thanks - there were a few case modifications along the way and it is a bit of a squeeze, especially when it had quad SLI in it:

Considering a couple of 570's at the moment, so will post a pic if that goes ahead.

the center light on my lexa s had crapped out on me. so i e-mailed nzxt RMA, and i got my package today!!! i thought they would send the little cable and the LED, they sent a new bezel. i am gonna have fun today
I've had severa; NZXT cases and they are a great company I also had a bad front led and they sent the whole front of the case, I opted to just replace the led instead of re-routing all the cables.
Nice micro case setup. And nice looking new PSU tw33k.
I can't wait till I can finally build my new system.

Guys, question here... I'm using Real Temp frequently to monitor my i7's temperature. Core 1's habitually idling at 40-45ºC, The other 3 cores are at around 38-42ºC. Now, Just for a test, I'll run a convertion of 34 FLAC audio files into MP3s 320kbps CBR at slow high quality using Lame. The encoder is dBPowerAmp v12. This baby is multi-threaded.

So, I start the convert... here is screenshot midway done :
heat_good_or_not.jpg

Notes :
1. HyperThreading is desactivated
2. TurboBoost is also desactivated

Maximum heat, from Core 1 to Core 4, 73ºC 71ºC 70ºC and 69ºC. I believe the threasold for a Core i7 is 73ºC. After that, the CPU diminishes performances to avoid overheat and damage.

What do you think guys... is it OK? I desactivated HyperThreading and TurboBoost because it would nearly reach 90ºC under load. Desactivating TurboBoost didn't do much HyperThreading did help reduce the heat of a good 10ºC under full load.

In fact, that was a report of my PC after almost 2 months being up ;)

That's way too hot.

Check that your CPU cooler is tight, you shouldn't be able to turn it at all.

If it is tight, I would get some more TIM (Artic Silver 5), take off the CPU cooler, clean it, re-apply the TIM and test it.

Guide for applying thermal paste

Your temps should be at 32 deg C at idle.
At Max load should be around 60 deg C.

Your CPU specs from Intel.
Intel® Core™ i7-950 Processor

Your Max Tcase is 67.9°C.
Tcase is the CPU case, add 5°C for your CPU cores, so call it max CPU core temp of 73°C.
I wouldn't go past 65°C for more than a few seconds.

If you are converting a lot of audio/video files I would consider getting a better cooler, you can get a nice one for less that $50.
My CM Hyper 212 Plus is $30 at Newegg. Idles at 28°C, CPU OC'ed to 3.8 MHz runs Prime95 at 59°C.

Some really impressive machines in this thread...

My budget laptop has been upgraded as much as possible, and as of yesterday I am using it with this 27"external display. Trying to calibrate it now using the built-in windows7 tool (thanks to alphanumeric’s post) but I can't seem to really see any difference between the existing default settings of the display and the suggested adjustment in the tool!)

Cheers kellymac35, I have been very pleased by this MSI mobo and as my first build it continues to serve me well. Now with all the fine kit I've replaced on my build I'm looking to build a second system and re-purpose the components for a system for my girlfriend who's suffering along with a Dell desktop. I admire EVGA mobo's and wish they made a AMD board. Likely stay with another MSI model 890FXA-GD70. Trying to sort out it's new ram set and then pull the trigger.

LoL, I'm not worried, just don't want you to damage that nice new rig.

When it gets close to 73°C, maybe 68°C it will start to throttle itself down to keep from damaging the CPU.

When you get the heat issues sorted, you can turn HyperThreading and TurboBoost back on and your CPU will perform much better.

I wouldn't waste your money on that small CPU cooler. It won't be much better than the stock Intel cooler.

Hate or not, get a big CPU cooler that has a big fan or two, that is what keeps the CPU running nice and cool. Your CPU will last a lot longer if it's not running hot.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Problem is... I don't have money and I simply HATE big fans that take all the place; Also, I did use Artic Silver 5.

I wouldn't go past 65°C for more than a few seconds.
