Wow, I havent been here for a while, hust logged on a few times and replied on the awesome Chrismas wishes and so on, but I checked the last 10 pages, nice new rig all who posted, I am super tired now so cant remember names and so on, but I saw allot of clean wiring jobs and some really nice cases. Grats to all, keep'em coming!!

Other news, its 45degrees C in South africa where I am, so even with my watercooling the temps on sli went up to 50degrees, so I stripped it, and added those ugly big 180 fans back in the case, all runs 5-7degrees lower now, so cant wait for the heat to go down so I can remove those fans. In other news pc still runs smoothly, I am looking at getting a second screen, same make and model, but I bought a new "toy" so its keeping me way bussy lol. Anyway I need some advice, please only answer if u have personal experience in this feild cause I allready read and heard all I can on google and so on, so I need that personal experience advice lol. I am looking to get a dvd writer, but the external usb ones, and using that as the only drive. Reason is still fuzzy, but will let u know when I know. What I basically need to know is how relaible are they, are they effective in booting off while its usb and so on.

thanx and cheers :)

So I suddenly dropped off the radar because, well, my SSD died and I finally decided to partition one of the 1TB drives and use that until I replace it with an 840 from Sammy.

PC's, man, they give you so much trouble at odd points in their lives.

Bummer on the SSD.

If you can raise the shekels, get an 840 PRO instead of an 840. It should be more reliable since the 840 Pro still uses MLC instead of the unproven TLC used in the 840s. The Pro has a five year warranty instead of on three years and has better specs.

I just ordered a 128 GB a couple of days ago. If you are on NewEgg's mailing list, they have them on sale right now.

Alsisgevat,
I've been using an external Samsung DVD writer on my lappty for a while now (like 8 months). So far it has worked flawlessly. My BIOS sees it as a bootable device and I haven't had any problems booting either Windows 7 installation disks, memtest86, Partition Wizard, Acronis, and many other things.
The only thing I don't like about it is that it uses two USB ports to run. Not enough power from just one.
Before the Samsung I had an LG drive. Didn't work as well as the Samsung. Sometimes it wasn't recognized, others it worked at whatever speeds it wanted to work. Erratic behavior.
Hope this helps.
Cheers!
J

I lost one of my Kingstons HyperX 3K 120GB today!
Both refused to start after I changed cases a few days ago, but they eventually did after resetting BIOS to AHCI and back to RAID.
Now one is gone... I will RMA it tomorrow. Hope the other one doesn't follow.
Luckily I keep an updated bootable partition on my spinners.
I think this is the price I pay for tweaking endlessly. Changed cases and GPUs within 3 days and things started to fall appart. Will receive a new mobo in a few days, but now I'm afraid to install it and see something fail again.
It is a steep learning curve. It is my first build, but feels like the 3rd or 4th...

I've never used one, but have considered it. Would a powered external USB hub provide more power or, I know USB 3.0 provides more power than USB 2.0. Would USB 3.0 provide enough power?

I tried using a powered USB 2.0 Hub, but the Samsung drive refused to work through it. When I read the online manual it said that that was very likely to happen and that the drive shoud be plugged into native ports.

It probably is but I don't even care to replace it, because while the speeds are great I continue to hear bad things about their drives.

Of course the same could be said of any product (which is chiefly the reason I purchased it in the first place) but I'd rather not play Russian Roulette with my stored files again, and I'm aware I'm doing that anyway with flash memory but I've heard nothing but greatness about Crucial's and Sammy's SSD's.

Michael, if it's under warranty, get it replaced and use it along with the Samsung. Do regular backups, they will save your bacon. They have mine, but I'm the backup king probably. I have everything backed up to at least 4 hard drives. Losing my data is not a concern to me. Using my SSDs is a concern. Speed kills. ;)

...I'm the backup king probably. I have everything backed up to at least 4 hard drives... ;)

You have me beat; I use only three drives per HDD. One of each group of three is kept in a safe deposit box at my Credit Union and gets rotated out no less than once a month. I also use Carbonite.

I do a full image once a week and a differential image between full images whenever I put something important on my computer.

Lady Fitzgerald, I'm surprised to find someone as fanatic as me. But, forget images. I have 2 drives and use Paragon Migrate. It is made especially for SSDs, but will work on spinners just as well. I clone my OS to another drive at least once a week, alternating weeks between drives. So, I always have 2 copies of my OS. If my drive died tonight, I wouldn't even lose an email, and would be back up and running in less than 5 minutes. To me, that is well worth the $19.95 it costs. Yes, I have a lot of hard drives. I think I should get some more. I'm sure I would find a use for them. Actually, I have been waiting for them to drop in price, back to where they were.

Just upgraded to an i5 3570k, Gigabyte Z77X UD3H and a Samsung 840Pro 128GB.
Found a slim fan for the top case, the CPU cooler and both fans now fit inside the case.

Nice job, Dave. Real clean and neat. No doubt you will love the rig and the Noctua fans are fantastic. The color kind of grows on you, but the performance is unquestioned and unheard. I've had to open the case to make sure they are still running. All around great job. I'm anxious to hear whether you think the Samsung 840 Pro is worth the extra money over the 830.
