I've learned the hard way to stay away from Sandforce controller based SSD's.............EVEN the Intel 520's(especially these)

There are too many excellent SSD's that DON'T use Sandforce.......Samsung 830/840, Plextor M5 Pro, Corsair Neutron GTX, OCZ Vertex 4....all these are FAST AND RELIABLE.

Thanks Kelly I have all Samsung and Crucial right now apart from a single SanDisk (which isnt crash hot) but I am thinking of trying the Plextor 256GB with the Marvell controller as it is a very reasonable price out here ($179).

You had any experience with that brand?

Just out of curiosity I was looking at trying a G Skill but notice they have a Sandforce controller and would like your opinion on it please.

I am not really familiar with this make/model. But when I hear 'Sandforce', I run. LOL Right now, I would also vote for the Samsungs.

I agree, staying away from all SandForce drives.
Next one for me is the Samsung, 830 is the only one available to me, which is ok the new 840 Pro as only a little faster.

The Plextor Pro line is very very beastly. Awesome controller with more awesome firmware......also NOT Sandforce

Oh and KB I was thinking of getting the 256GB Plextor and yep I did notice it was a Marvell controller too so you reckon worth a shot at it?? The one I was looking at was the slightly cheaper - well nearly $100 was this one

Plextor PX-256M5S 256GB SSD [PX-256M5S] - $179.00 : PC Case Gear as opposed to the M5P version @$279.

I cannot see much difference in the way of performance as a piece of info the 128GB M5S is only $95!! which is $50 less than the M5S version.

That is the Plextor M5S model, not the M5 Pro model. The Pro is more of a high-end SSD while the M5S is more of a value oriented one. Benchmarks show the M5 Pro is beastly......and it is also suppose to be more of an enterprise drive which means it more than likely is held to a higher reliability standard than their other models.

Yeah I did see in the ad it was a business oriented device but I think for what I want the M5S will be ok. The only difference I can see of any value is the sequential access - write and the random read and writes.

Thanks to Brink for continuing my original SSD performance thread.

I am STILL using a Patriot Inferno (SandForce SF-1222 controller I believe)

I use it for the OS and 5-6 programs and use spinners for storage and other programs. After 2 years of pretty heavy use it still boots fast and runs fast. I have not tested it lately because I have not noticed any speed issues (or any other issues)

My next SSD will not be A SandForce controlled drive but this thing just keeps going. I have been thrilled by it's performance. FYI

Well, trying to correct a BSOD issue, I uninstalled the iastor.sys Intel Rapid Storage driver and used the msahci. With msahci the thing ran like an old spinner drive, so I went back to the iastor driver and this is what happened, very happy with it.

What you want to be more concerned with is the 4K read/writes, Windows uses that size block more than any other.

After purchasing a Laptop with a slow 5200 rpm spinner I decided to accomplish 2 upgrades with 1 new SSD. The Intel 510 Sata III SSD on my main rig found a new home in the Laptop and a new Intel 330 Sata III now re-energizes the main rig with much better performance.

Yes and it also qualified for the Windows 8 upgrade offer for $14.99 so the money saved on a new OS essentially paid for the new SSD, However I still prefer Windows 7 and have no plans to upgrade my 2 desktops.
