For a single SSD drive to get Read speeds of 500MB/s+ and 2 drives in RAID 0 speeds of 1000MB/s+ is getting towards the interface speed limit, bearing in mind that it is 600MB/s and that you have to factor in operational overheads. I note that your Write speeds aren't as high as mine were when I was running non-RAID, but it is chiefly the reading of data and the speed at which it can be read that governs the overall feeling of speed of the computer.

In order to be able to go faster than 1000MB/s, we would need to increase the number of drives so that more SATA channels are employed for the array. For example, 3 drives should yield a speed of ~1500MB/s and 4 ~2000MB/s (I wonder if anyone has tried or could verify that?) and that really would be a lightning fast system.

Based on advice I reverted to Intel RST 11.2 with considerable improvement in my benches. Unfortunately I don't have a copy of my earlier actual runs using 11.6 and 11.7, but they were definitely not at the same level.

Your 4K times are fantastic - and that is really all that counts for the OS.

Actually, (and it is one heckuva coincidence) it was you in a post long long ago that made me aware of the importance of 4K speeds for normal use. A belated thanks for that.

Seriously, having seen the figures that Wolfgang posted of a friend's machine, I'm considering another upgrade and going for a pair of OCZ Vertex 4 SATA III 256GB drives in a RAID0 configuration. My other SSDs (the ones I currently have installed) will go into my other computer that I have built using the components from my previous system.

Some additional tweaking (stripe size) and system overclocking (I'm not sure if overclocking makes any major difference) results in better 4K for Vector (256 GB) X 2 raid 0

Numbers seems too low for me, I have no idea what to try to improve, tired all options from AHCI to RAID, different RAID controller etc. Still doesn't come as high as it should.

Eric your numbers are a little lower than Dwarf's, but you shouldn't notice any performance issue. If OCZ has some kind of tool box, see if you can invoke Garbage Collection.

I have Z77 Asus Maximus V formula, it has TRIM with latest version of Intel Rapid Storage anyway/
I checked with CrystalDiskInfo, it show TRIM on both drives in array.

Ah, I thought those are two names of same technology.

Nevertheless, OCZ Toolbox is used only for firmware updates and doesn't even show drives in RAID at all. Only information can be obtained via CrystalDiskMark. Is there any way to check if GC is enabled? Because I am suspecting that it's should be controller function (not OS-driven, like TRIM) which should work any OS, any configuration?

I'm going by what Crucial told me, I have an m4 SSD. They said for Garbage collection to run the drive has to be powered up with no read/write at all. They suggested leaving the system set in BIOS or powering up with the SATA data cable disconnected and leave it for 8 hours or more.

As I understand it, TRIM will move old data from a NAND cell to a cache so that cell can be used again. Garbage Collection takes care of deleting the file TRIM has moved but takes longer.

But Crucial uses Marvell controller, that procedure could be different for Indilinx-based OCZs I guess.
