Acc. time and 4K are the most important nums for the OS. Your nums are 'average' but will outperform a spinning disk many times.

I would install the 60GB Mushkin SSD. At a later time you can always use it for something else.

Yes mate I would but my supplier (usually the lowest pricer) doesn't stock Mushkins. The only low GB SSD's are ones with Sandforce controllers

Due to a little lottery luck, I got a Samsung 840 Pro, 256GB SSD. The Magician software certainly mucked up my carefully adjusted power options and re-enabled hibernation. It took me a bit to figure out how to change it all so it stays where I want it. It works rather nice, reboot times went to over 90 seconds a few time, not has settled to 41-42. The old Crucial M4 128GB reboot time was always over 55 seconds, sometimes 61-62.

After the grizzling, here's the poop on it. Not following my own advice, I just restored an image from the old M4 drive.

Gary, there must have been a problem with your M4. My 60GB M4 boots in 17 seconds and change. Here is the event 100 data.

I think so too Wolfgang and I'm going to see about an RMA for it. The reboot times always have been in the 50-60 second range since new. I think it may be because I have the OS and programs on SSD and Users on a HDD. I have never seen a reboot under 40 seconds.
I wonder, those of you who have seem reboots in the sub 30 second range, is you entire system on the SSD?

I have this configuration on all my systems because I am cheap and work with small 60GB SSDs. Just today I installed my first 120GB Vector on this older Dell system.

Your story sounds like the bootmgr was on the HDD - is that a possibility.

Basically yes Gary, the only things I have on other drives are Steam and some backups etc.

As you know I am around 21 second Reboot time.

Yeah, I guess that rules out a bootmgr problem. And since you made a fresh install, that would also rule out an alignment problem. So there is not much left other than a hardware problem.

I never updated my M4 firmware because I once read that there were problems with the recent versions. I stayed on FW 0309.

I also have the OS, programs, and 3-4 of the games that I play on my SSD. Users Data is on a HDD. Reboot time is 21-25 seconds. Doesn't really matter though........I rarely reboot this machine.

Maybe we are comparing apples and oranges. The times I quote are from hitting the Restart button until the desktop in functional.
In Event viewer that would be event 100 + event 200 + POST time. Of course POST time isn't in the event viewer.

Gary, what is the event 100 time - that would be the right measure.

There are, of course, all kinds of other factors involved. Example:

I have now installed an OCZ Vector on my Inspiron 530. The Vector is one of the fastest SSDs available. But my Inspiron has no 6Gb port, so I have it on a 3Gb port. In addition the Inspiron has only 4GB of RAM and a Q6600 (2.4GHz quad) CPU. Event 100 is 25 seconds.

The 'slower' M4 is on my XPS 8300 with an i7 and 8GB of RAM plus a 6Gb port. So event 100 shows 17 seconds.

Bottom line: Not only the speed of the SSD is responsible for the boot time but also the overall PC configuration.

My worst event 100 is 33471ms, and the best is 21864ms. I think that worst time is the first reboot on the 840 Pro.

I had one event 200, Windows shutdown time, of more than 47 seconds and change.

I have been using THIS to time reboots.



I connected the 840 Pro to a SATA II port to format it and it was noticeably slower with the ASSSD test.

I assume the crazy ASUS BIOS is the bottle neck, it takes 21-22 seconds to POST. That's from the time the Shutting Down screen disappears until the Starting Windows appears. Here' the result of this install's reboot time.

Any advice for me? Been using this SSD 8 months, or so, I think.

I just did upgrade my firmware, once I was able to, had to remove the AMD SATA controller driver temporarily, to push the new firmware and then put it back afterwards. Both the AMD SATA controller driver and firmware are the latest.

You guys cheating by using old version of AS SSD Benchmark, the current 1.7... is from May '09?

The Adata SX900 uses a Sandforce controller, which deals with compressible data on the fly, which is what contributes to the faster write speeds. AS SSD tests with incompressible data which doesn't allow drives with Sandforce controllers to reach those high write speeds. To be honest, Sequential Read/Write speeds mean dick to 99.9% of users. The real world performance numbers are: 4K and Acc. time and they are exponentially faster than a mechanical hard drive.

Yep Gary that is just about what my machine does at the moment the Sandy bridge boots faster than Ivy and both have the same 830 drive but the Sandy is a Gigabyte board withthe non EUFI BiOS.

Well, it's been a little over a year since I built this system and the Samsung 830 SSD is running as good today as the day I installed it. I've not been easy on it by any means, and it just asks for more!

@ Faladu: If you want to see what your numbers are on compressible data, get Crystal Disk Mark, Click on File > Test Data > All 0x00 (0 Fill), then run a test. That will allow CDM to test the SSD and let it take advantage of it's compression algorithm.
