The only thing I will point out is you are using the generic Microsoft SATA controller driver(msahci in the top left corner) and we have found that USUALLY the newer Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver works better. I say usually because sometimes it makes things worse.....most of the time it works great. I would at least look into it.

Here is a screen shot of what i'm dealing with , i went to the Asus website and i thought i downloaded a driver called rapid storage technology but after installing i get the below driver.

My computer is an Asus u56E win 7 sp1 64 bit/ i also have a Sandy bridge i 5 processor 2430M

Yes, it uses ram. The only real problem is all the tests are testing the ram cache not the SSD. So, the numbers are great, for benchmarks, It really does nothing for actual usage. I've run mine every way you can possibly run them. The problem is that sata III is maxed out right now. The limitations of sata III have been reached and no matter what the numbers say, about 500MB/s is all the real world sata III is capable of carrying. If you look at the newer boards, the high end ones are coming out with sata express which runs off of pcie lanes instead of sata ports in order to overcome sata limitations. I think some are running 1 SSD off of 2 sata III ports, but I'm not sure about that part. Just like USB 3.0, there is the theoretical speed, but in real world, you won't get even close to it. I've tested it running it from 1 SSD to another SSD, and the limits are still there.

The sata limitations are why the new SSDs coming out like the Samsung 850 Pro are really no faster than the 840 Pro, because of the sata limitations. Running it over pcie lanes is the only way they will ever be faster.

Wow, this is a truly informative post and what i keep reading as well . Why bother spending more money if your going to be limited to around 500 mb .

I didn't realize it at first but it makes sense , why is everyone posting the ram cache scores then if it means nothing in real World usage ? Deceiving don't you think ?

Johnny, if you run it 5 more times, you will get 5 different scores. A little advice. Quit running them and use it and enjoy it. I run a test about every 6 months. If the numbers are 'in the ball park' I don't run any more. I will only run a test if I can tell a slow down or feel like something is not right. That's all benchmarks are good for in real world performance. There are two kinds of people who run benchmarks all the time. Those who don't know enough and think they really mean something. And those who do know they don't mean anything but think they can impress everyone with the numbers. Everyone else, just use the SSD and enjoy the quickness.

Just received my Samsung 850 SSD drive (512) today, but won't be able to install it till after class. I have a 5pm class this evening.

Anyway I got it so that I can use my 840 (256gig) as a second drive to house Windows 10 for testing purposes. Plus I wanted a larger drive to move files around, including my 50+gig photo library.

I'm not sure how much of a performance gain I'll see over the 840, but I do like the larger size, and thus the main reason for getting this, plus the 850 does look to have killer performance.

BTW, for some odd reason, I'm still not able to run the AS SSD benchmark without error...



so I can't say if this score is right...

And since I already have a Samsung 840 installed, yes, I have the Magician software installed, and Rapid mode enabled.

To be honest mate for that killer performance one pays premium prices and personally for me the speed of the bog standard EVO is more that enough.
I sometimes think that some will not be happy until the speed reaches the speed of light or perhaps before it is even set in motion

The real big difference was going from a hard drive to SSD. I think it will be a long time again before we see or feel a jump in speed and effectiveness as SSD are.

Well contrary to popular belief I didn't get it for benchmarking but the added space. Some of you already know I hardly OC, let alone benchmark. I just figured if I was going to get a 512gig, why not get the 850 with it's 10 year warranty, plus the performance to boot.

Honestly though, I doubt many (me included) will this drive 5-years from now, let alone 10.

Anyway I'm thinking about just doing a OS reinstall instead of the migrate operation I was originally going to do using Paragon's Hard Disk Manager; that would have taken 5-10 minutes, but a reinstall might be in order due to nagging issues with my current install.

Problem is I don't have time for a reinstall as I've got two papers and a test due by Tuesday for finals this week. So for now it looks like PC upgrades are on hold till finals are done

Until i realized that i was upset with my SSD performance , once i knew that in actual use there is very little improvement and it would be barely noticeable i thought why spend more money since there is a bottle neck in most current systems anyway.

I agree with most of that and I consider myself an enthusiast too. But, I still have an X25 M and a vertex 2 which are still in use. A 10 year warranty to me is them showing confidence in their products and me not having to worry about a 3-5 year warranty. Performance on SATA III has just about topped out and there will be few, if any performance increases that are more than marginal, which is why many of the new boards are coming out with sata express slots which run from PCIe lanes and not through the SATA ports. That is where we will see significant performance gains.
