I will definitely make a new image after install before making any changes.

I turned it on yesterday morning... haven't noticed any speed increases. I'll give it another day or so as I haven't been on this machine enough to be certain.

Fumz, do you have a sadistic streak in you or maybe you hold something against me. I mean, I can't understand why anyone would find it funny that I get fussed at all the time. It's just a case that I talk about a new computer part and she fusses. So, I go upstairs, close the door and order the part. She is OK then until the part arrives and starts fussing again. I go back upstairs, close the door, and install the part. What's wrong with that?

Well it is installed. Driver installed and recognized in Disk Management.
On to the transfer.

After hooking it up the 'puter wouldn't turn on! :shock:

Q-connector came off. Hooks all the front power panel controls to the moboard but disconnects easily when moved. Phew!
First thought was OH SHXX!!!!

Note: Before you activate the SSD, it is recommended to set the BIOS to AHCI. Best time to do that is just before you change the boot sequence. Once Windows7 is running, you make the corresponding settings in the OS. Here is a tutorial on how to do that.

Many people claim that there is a significant performance gain with AHCI. I, however, did not see that. But it may be different from system to system.

I'm ready to transfer using Paragon Migrate which is what I'm doing next.

Only lists C / Win7 or E/XP partition. No D listed to select.
That is the way it should work?

Hi Hopalong,

You should set ahci before you load Windows. Doing it afterwards is a pain. If you have a 6GB SSD, then you'll definitely want ahci.

If the box is set at IDE and Windows 7 boots that way, AHCI has to be enabled in the Windows 7 registry before you enable it in the PC BIOS , if you do the BIOS first Windows will not boot.

Does this clear it up?

If you're copying an image from the old drive to the new one I would do the transfer first then turn AHCI on from within Windows when booted from the new drive. That will leave your old drive intact should there be a hiccup.

What do you mean by "which OS" is XP included in this mix?


If you have pre-installed OSs and they were installed as IDE, boot Windows, edit the registry, restart and enable AHCI in the BIOS.

If XP is installed as IDE that will foul up everything, there is a work-around to enable AHCI in XP after install but I believe it a real PITA to set.

You could boot Windows 7 as AHCI and XP as IDE and continue on as that, and that would work, you would have to set the BIOS for the OS you want to boot at each startup; I've done that and it gets old really quick.

I'm repeating I realize but double checking.

Migrate the image, then change boot order, boot to SSD then follow BFK's tutorial, then change Bios.

No XP is not being migrated/imaged.

I'm just trying to transfer C and D- which is recovery- but D isn't listed in Paragon Migrate.

So I'm not sure if it will be included.

I thought this was supposed to be the easy way. I'm not so sure now!

XP eventually- when Win 7 is running on the SSD- will be on the HDD by itself.
I don't use it often, maybe once a week, so Booting it from Bios isn't a problem.

OK I get it now, just get Windows 7 migrated and booting then set AHCI and when you need to boot to XP just set the BIOS to IDE for XP, then back to AHCI to start W7.
