damn, you guys are nuts thats what my whole system costed!! I was thinking of the addition of a solid state, not that kind though. I'm sure this has been stated already, and I haven't searched or anything so don't shoot me.. but where the price is at these days you could put together a nice compilation of ram for just system files that just dominates these speeds.

I am sure many of the members spend what may seam a ridiculous amount of money on our systems but it is what we enjoy doing. Being a GEEK is what I like, sorry to offend some others! I am by no means as skilled as many here but I do what I can with the limited knowledge I have. I just wanted to get one and play with it to see what it can do. Some people overclock but not me. Once I get this new tou I will let you know what it does!

^^No offense taken, just my initial reaction. Yes, I realize peoples spend enormous amounts of money on their systems and I appreciate it. I also take pride in getting the most bang for buck. And yes, I DO overclock...

I hope I made the right pick as I just bought the Newegg.com - OCZ RevoDrive X2 OCZSSDPX-1RVDX0240 PCI-E 240GB PCI-Express x4 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) at a discounted price of $610 total with $115 discount and an extra $2.99 discount for preferred account and free shipping and interest free for 6 months. It is my tax return gift to myself. When I get it and install it I will let you know how good it is and how much faster it is. I know it is a high cost and I really did not need it but this is something I wanted and had to try. The speeds looked unreal!

Techymike can you give us a quick review of that drive once you set it up? What it took to get it set up and running? Issues? Maybe you could create a seperate thread for the review? I'm sure many would be interested.

Thanks.

Especially if they are going to play with performance numbers. I'll also add that I'm not impressed with their forums tech support. Too much attitude.
Yeah, some of those people on the OCZ forum are very high strung. I go there only for some of the good tutorials, but the discussion threads are not worth it. Also too many "fumblers" who twist and tweak for no apparent reason - sometimes even the wrong reasons.

Yup, exactly. Lots of attitude from tech support trying to "ride herd" on a group of high strung "fumblers." So may people babbling on and on about nothing that it takes hours of reading to find valuable information. The sad part is the information is in there, it's just hard to find.

I don't know, maybe I just have a bad taste in my mouth this morning after learning it appears one of my Vertex 2's from back in December is a 25 nm drive (thanks for the link sygnus21). I didn't want a smaller-than-advertised 25 nm drive, at least until the issues of OverProvisioning, design life, reliability, etc. are sorted out. It's still sealed so maybe they'll do the swap without charge. We'll see.

Tom

Tom, I would send the drive back. I am sure they will exchange it.

Yeah, but there's still the problem of discerning which drive is a 25 nand drive and which is a 34? You can't just ask the vendor to hook up the drive and see what it's formatted to.

There has to be a way to read the packaging to see what's what? That no one is telling.... yet.

I just did the test on mine a brand new drive got 285 best 265 worst which is read I think it should go much faster than that how can i check if i have plugged it into the right port and getting 6GB,s ?
What drive ar we talking about and what is the setup. What makes you think that you should get 6Gb/sec?

I have the latest driver version 6 For my crucial C300 128GB on the spec of the drive sayes it will run at 6GB opposed to 3GB's I just bought new mother board which should run at 6GB hence why I choose the crucial drive over the other brands I was just a bit disapointed with the test I run as should get closer to 350+ I am all very new to this building PC so just wanted to make sure I had done every thing right

Thanks for you help in advance

I have no complaints with the speed just wanted to check I was doing everything right I read a review somewhere on net and it did bench marking and said that with 6GB MB increased the transfer speed. I am new to all this so i really dont know any better just got the moding bug thanks to this site! And i can ask stupid questions on here without getting shot down in flames like would in pc shop

Plus, the 355MB/sec is best case wih very large records. But the OS usually uses small 4K blocks where the R/W speed is a lot lower (check on any of the Atto measurements in this thread).

PS: there are no stupid questions. You are doing fine.

Ian, your motherboard manual will tell you which ports are 6Gb/s as well as how to set up your ports in bios as well as how to install raid/ahci drivers. I am not familiar with your MB (just barely familiar with my own). If you don't have one you can download a copy of your manual here. Just don't get caught up in the theoretical speed and the actual speed. The 6GB/s is only in labs, not here in the real world. Your speeds are not bad, but like WHS was making reference to, on a boot drive access times are probably more important.

PCIE SSD Install

I will be honored to share what I have to do to install and upload the entire Op system along with moving my files from one drive to another. First off I have to take it to work and let my buddies touch it so they can ewe and awe over it! LOL Then I will post what I did to do the install. From what I read is that the USB drive is critical. The ones that gave bad reviews did not know what to do to install it properly! AS most of my PC use is video application... I suck really bad at gaming! No matter what I try! I excel at ripping and hacking for BD, DVD video and sat systems! :D Scripting....That is another post not mentioned.
Anyways I took 1/2 a day off and the wife out for a shopping spree today. You know shopping for a man is like waiting for dial up to upload a web page! It just takes and feels forever! And to add taking care of a 2.5 year old just adds the anchor being dragged. I know this is off the subject but WTF! Why try it on if you have no intention of buying it?

Sorry to rant! And happy valentines day!

Before anyone looks at a PCIe SSD, please make sure that your MB will be able to boot from the PCIe. I know mine is supposed to so we shall see, there are some that apparently are not capable but I have not researched those.

This is a post from the OCZ forum noting the steps to set up prior to the install of the Revodrive. I am expecting it this Thursday but will not install it until Friday after work. My coworkers want to look at it first. We are all into computers and they have started me into gaming.

From Tony, OCZ staff:
You need to follow a dedicated install procedure, the boards get confused on boot order and do what you are seeing in some cases.

1 make sure you remove any other HDD from the system

2 Go to bios disable 3rd and 2nd boot device, disable boot to other devices and set 1st boot device to HDD

3 set hdd boot order to add in device or revo if it is listed

4 set onboard sata controller to ide ( this is a proven method but you can hack reg to ahci later)

5 disable all other sata/raid controllers on the system

6 consider installing win7 off USB, DVDrom does work though

now save and exit.

7 On the reboot hit f10 or F8 or esc or whatever brings up the boot order menu...pick the USB or DVDrom and boot to it.

8 Install the driver for revo as per normal and let it get to the 10sec count down timer

9 when it reboots wait for the 1st bios splash screen, power the system off, remove the power to the PSU and let the system drain off for 2 minutes, remove the install DVD or remove the USB drive and any other drive you used to load the revo driver.

10 power back up, again hit the key to bring up the boot menu for your board and choose to boot to Revo

11 on the next reboot just hit the boot menu key, no need to power off.

12 this should get you to windows, make sure revo is still listed as the only boot device in bios.

13a if you now want to swap to ahci do the reg hack listed here in the guide sections of the ssd forums

Anyone reading this...this is NOT the only way to install revo, its the way we found during beta test that worked the best. We have installed in ahci mode, we have installed with other drives in the system...this is just a proven safe way that should get you to windows desktop.

Be warned though, many boards have limited PCIE storage support, some may have more issues than others. Some also get VERY confused by all the boot roms for raid controllers etc so this is why you need to disable near everything you can.
