And if it is like most benchmarks, you can run it tomorrow and get completely different numbers.

OCZ Vertex 3 throttled this time. This is for those of us who were following the Vertex 2 testing also.

For those who may have forgotten the Vertex 2 resumed working in normal usage but was not able to continue with Endurance testing.
The Vertex 3 is still throttled but testers are hopeful it will return to proper working after an extended idle time. Maybe!


This is NOT indicative of normal use such as we use them for our OS. This drive was exposed to a "hammered state" of continuous endurance writing at maximum write speeds.

Every individual electronic device has a different lifespan, then the effect of it's environment, clean power, humidity, static electricity, temperature, etc. has an influence. Then there is the physical components, nand quality, controller software and hardware, connections, cables, etc.

From what I have been reading, considering the above, I would expect the lifespan to be 500TB to +1PB.
On average, SSDs should be able to last closer to the 1PB range.
This is a test with random components, it may or may not be the average, you would have to test with hundreds of identical units to get an average. Only the manufacturers have this information and they will not likely make it public.

This is just my opinion, only time will tell.

The drive "mechanics" would probably last for 100 years except for a few capacitors. It's the NAND memory that gives out. The same failure occurs in USB flash drives. The memory looses it's ability to retain a charge. Sort of like a rechargeable battery.
