Side speakers not working

I just built a new computer and installed the release candidate for Windows 7 64 bits. Everything works fine except sound will not come out of my side speakers. If I plug in my side speakers in another jack, sound does come out of them (but of course, it's the wrong channel). So it might be that the green jack just doesn't work, but then the computer can see it and knows when I plug something in it.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte ep45-ud3r and I have the latest Realtek drivers. Any idea what could be the problem?

EDIT: Small update here: I plugged in my speakers in another jack and used the realtek audio manager to set that jack to output to my side speakers. Still doesn't work, so it's not a hardware problem.

EDIT: Set it to "front speaker out" and sound does come out of them. Now I'm not sure what to think. I've got 5.1 speakers. The two ones next to the center speaker are supposed to be "side speakers", right? So my setup won't be full 5.1 like this?

Anyway, in the meantime this is an ok workaround but if anyone can help me find a way to get this to work the right way I'd appreciate it. At least I know it's a software issue.

EDIT: Sorry about that, that's actually the way it's supposed to work. -_- Side speakers are for 7.1.

Have you configured the channels in the sounds control panel?

Control Panel - Sounds, select the speakers for the default output device, then click on the configure button on the lower left that becomes active. select your setup eg: 5.1, 7.1 and go through the motions.

See, that's the thing, I've done this a few times and it never works. It seems that the default 5.1 settings don't work, but retasking whatever jack my speakers are plugged in as "side speakers" (which is the default setting) doesn't work. It only works if they're "front speaker out" which I suppose is for regular (not surround) speakers.

EDIT: Disregard this. I am an idiot. The manuel just informed me I was horribly wrong and that's the way it was supposed to be. Argh, I must have lost like 2 hours of sleep working on this problem. First 7.1 card I've got, I guess I just assumed my speakers had to be plugged in like with my last 5.1 card. -_-
