video card:

i have no sound card, and was using the onboard sound. in xp, it recognized the chip as a sigmatel hd audio chip, and i had the Intel Audio Studio installed as well, that came with the intel board.

my issue is as follows. when i installed windows 7, i lost access to some of my sound features. windows 7 does recognize my basic audio out of the box, and it works for playback. however, it does not recognize any kind of microphone at all, or any recording devices other than the generic Digital Audio (S/PDIF), which wont let me record.

intel does not seem to have any support for this board for win 7, and i was hoping someone had some ideas.

Under device manager, i only have 2 things that have a question mark, and i know what both are.. one is my wifi card i havent gotten drivers for yet, and one is a tv tuner card i havent gotten drivers for yet.

under sound video and game controllers, only thing i have is High Definition Audio Device, a Microsoft device driver that is allowing my speakers to work somewhat.

any thoughts?

Intel seems to be slow in Win 7 support or in some cases is not supporting it at all. I have an Intel DP35DP M/B and there is even limited Win 7 64 bit support for this model and it's still a current (but old) model board.

There are differences in the way Vista/Win 7 handles some functions from XP, such as the sound, and at a minimum Vista drivers are needed. Does Intel have Vista drivers for the SigmaTel (Now called IDT)? My DP35DP board does have Vista drivers and you can try those to see if it will work - it's listed as the newer IDT rather than SigmaTel (this driver even has the System Mixer function).

Ultimately with older hardware (M/B) you may have to go to a separate sound card to get full functionality. Many users on the Dell users forum that have upgraded older (XP) systems to Vista or Win 7 have had to add separate PCI sound cards to get sound in Vista and/or Windows 7.

(I don't know which reference to the "stoner" you are referring to but that is my last name).

i got a sigmatel driver from Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com,

SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

i tried running it two ways. in regular, i.e. just click it, it threw an error, to the effect of memory invalid; when i tried in compability mode, it gave me a msg saying invalid operating system, and quit.

i believe i will end up just going for a standalone card, unless i decide to replace my mobo first. well see. im not currently playing wow (for the semester at least, its harder than average) and don't actually need a mic, and since speakers do work theres no rush i dont think.

and my nickname some number of years ago was stoner, due to my cloud-9 attitude and the fact that i look stoned if i dont get enough sleep. the nickname went the way of the dodo, but this username did not.
