Hello all,

I have a minor problem.

When I am listening to music, sometimes the sound is distorted for a short period of time.
This also happens if I return from a break, and my display turns on when I move the mouse (while the music is still playing).

If I just listen to music, and don't do other things, it does not occur as far as I tested.

Below is the screen shot of the sound device driver I currently use:

Thanks in advance for teaching me.

I have an XPS M1710 and the sound has always been messed up. Now that I've installed Win7 I don't have any sound at all.

I think it is an issue with SigmaTel. I've tried about every driver I can think of and still can't get it to work.

It appears you have the generic windows driver installed. If you can provide your Dell service Tag #. It should be locate by the serial #.We can look up a driver for your sound device. If the Dell site doesn't have a 7 driver a Vista might work in compatibility mode. I found this driver from sigmatel, but it doesn't provide any information on what OS it is for. Download program SigmaTel Audio by SigmaTel This is why it is always good to go to the manufacturers site. Fabe

I just tried the driver you suggested and ended up with a error: Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again. That did not work either

thefabe,
Thank you for your effort to help me.

mod9k, thank you for testing this download, it is sad the driver did not work.

Dell does not provide Windows 7 drivers, it only provides Windows Vista x86 drivers. I run Windows 7 x64, so I have decided not to install x86 drivers. Is this correct? Or should I still try to download and install the Windows Vista x86 drivers?

Best regards,

Back in XP the sound seemed to come on and off when ever it wanted too. Some times it would be off for days or weeks and then all the sudded it would start working again. My older brother is a real tech guy and at Christmas last year he fixed it by messing with the driver. But no more than a week later it stopped working again.

I had sound before installing Win7 and hoped that the install would fix the issue but instead I've got nothing again.

Lets hope Dell, Lexmark, Toshiba and Adobe all get their act in gear and start getting the drivers out the door. You would think they didn't know Win7 was coming out or something.

I went to the Dell website and made an account and serched for info the sound issue. I was told to do a diagnostic by hitting F12 when the Dell Spash screen comes up and select Diagnostic. I did this and it began running through the tests. Then all the sudden my computer "beeped" for the first time in months.

Then I was given the option to either do a custom system check where I was able to check all the sound functions. It passed all the test but the Mono Output Soung Playback Test. I gave me the following error codes: 1B63 111B. I looked on the Dell site to find an answer and it looks like A LOT OF PEOPLE have had the same issue. All the forums eventually let to one answer. That the chip on the mother board for sound was shot.

If it is shot then why could I hear sounds during the Analog test and not the Mono test? And if only the Mono part is bad, couldn't I set it up to use the Analog part? And if so, how do I do this?

I also ran a Speaker Funtinality Test under the System Board tests and it worked fine. I heard all eight sounds. So again, there life there somewhere, I just can't seem to get it to work. Any ideas?????

The link below tells about using a toshiba driver which will allow you to use the onboard speakers but will disconnect the head phone jack. Basically it sounds like there is another more common issue with the jack coming loose causing the system to either kill the sound all together or killing just the onboard speakers.

I haven't installed it yet because after doing the Dell Diagnostic, see above, I now have sound in my head phones again.

mod9k,

A lot of information you gathered, nice ;-)

My sound is working, also the head phone jack, but only sometimes the sound is distorted for a very short moment.

I hope your sound will work soon.

Hello zx81, run a search on the Dell website via the link above. I also saw a post or two on your issue.
