Solved Silent driver install on Windows start?

I have a little bit of a hardware problem that i could not resolve. The driver installs fine and works flawlessly, but after reboot, the hardware disconnects and is disabled.

Solution is to run the driver setup again, but it doesn't install anything (duration: only 2-3 seconds), just seems to enable the hardware again and it's working. Until the next reboot.

I wanted to automate this driver "installation", because it's a couple of clicks through the install dialogue every time and annoying. Is there any way to silently run the driver upon windows start and skipping all the dialogs? Like put the driversetup.exe shortcut into the startup-folder and run it with "-silent" or something similar?

PS: Before somebody asks - no, there is no newer/better driver for this, it's not supported anymore.

Hi Maxie, i updated my specs with the tool. You'll notice that i'm on Win10, but i'm looking for general suggestions, and i'm here because this forum is more frequented.

The hardware is an old Wacom Intuos digitizer/tablet (1st generation), the driver is from Win7.

As i wrote, the first 3 generations of hardware are not supported anymore. Wacom is at the 7th generation now, i think.

Is nobody here knowledgeable enough to suggest a way for silently installing a driver in Windows?

pnputil is a Windows command line tool that can install h/w device driver files (the set of files that implement the h/w interface is called the "driver package"). We can try using pnputil. The catch is that the EXE file, like the one you found on the vendor site, is the "device installation app". The installation app always includes the driver package. However, it may also include application software and do other actions.

We can try pnputil but first
> Can you give me a link to the driver EXE file
> Re-boot to re-create the problem. Look in Device Manager. Find the device. Right click, select Properties. On the General tab, look at the Device Status. Does it say device working properly or is there an error code number? If so, give me the Driver Status error code #. I don't need the actual error message

/* EDIT */
While you're in Device manager, have a look. Do you see any devices with a yellow icon? If so, tell me their Driver Status error code # as well

Hey ComputerGeek, thanks for the help offer. For starters, here is the link to the driver:
http://downloadeu.wacom.com/pub/WINDOWS/pro615-3a_int.exe

See attached image: I suppose, it's the Wacom HID Digitizer. But even if not, everything with the name Wacom is shown with the status "This device is working properly". And nowhere a yellow mark, or anything else. But, of course, the light on the tablet is off, and it's disabled (until i "install" the driver again, but even then nothing changes in device manager).

I think we're in luck! The driver .EXE installation file on the Wacom driver site is a self extracting executable. It uses Setup.exe to do the install. Setup.exe has a silent install option

  • Run that Wacome .EXE executable again. When the Accept Agreement window appears do not respond. Leave it open. Move on to next step
  • Open File Explorer. Copy/paste the path below into Explorer. Hit Enter
    Code:
    %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp\WZSE0.TMP
  • These are the Wacom tablet installation files. Copy them to a folder on your Desktop (You can verify they include a Setup.exe file and a filename WacomTablet.xml)
  • You can now click Decline on the Accept Agreement window
  • Open an admin command prompt. Navigate to the folder on your Desktop then enter Setup.exe /s
  • It should perform a silent install

/* EDIT */
It must run from an elevated command prompt to avoid the UAC prompt

Wow, this was easy! It worked as you said. I set it to run 30sec delayed at Win10 log-on with the Task Scheduler.

You are my hero! Thanks again for taking the time to help a fella in need. :)
