Sleep after recording?

I use Windows Media Ctr to schedule timed recordings from a sleep state.

Is there a setting that will put the comp back into a sleep state after the recording ends?

The PC should go back to sleep after no activity. Check your power settings as per this tutorial, especially the media setting Multimedia settings> When sharing media> Set to Allow the computer to sleep to prevent it from waking up the computer

I haven't explored all options, but am trying the first choice in a few minutes.
In advanced, I set it to "away" and sleep.

Will this automatically put the comp into Sleep after a scheduled recording has ended?

Edit: Well, that didn't work.
Plan 2 : Set the advanced to 3 minutes - display and comp.

I'll let you know - if that doesn't work - on to your other links.

I went to advanced options - display will turn off, but comp will not sleep at all.

Am I doing something wrong?

The only way to put comp to sleep is by desktop or keyboard.

The second pic shows 3 minutes, because I changed it before snapshot.

All power options set the same.

Hmmm, I don't have MCE, but believe it should go back to sleep when no activity/idle. I'll post for others, see if anyone else has experience/ideas. A Guy

I have 2 machines with Windows 7 used as media center PC's recording TV. I do not sleep my machines at all but you may not be giving the machine enough time after the recording has stopped to sleep. Sometimes I have seen disc activity on my machines 10 to 20 mins after the recording has stopped as it finishes writing the 5 or 6 GB per hour file.
Consider updating your bios, system drivers and check for de fragmenting programs, screen savers or other file transfer processing.

Sorry only just seen your post, two things to look at

I seem to remember someone else posting about this and the suggestion was to look in Settings in regard to shared folders preventing the machine going to sleep.

The second thing is that you do not need to be in MC, at least with W7, in order to record, so on my machine, MC does not start when I boot it and I close it when we have finished recording, leaving the machine in the desktop, Windows puts the machine to sleep as normal, wakes it up to record and then puts it to sleep again.

If you don't open WMC, how do you set a recording time?

MC does not start when I boot it and I close it when we have finished recording

If you have to close it after recording, that defeats my purpose which is to have it go to sleep by itself.

Have I misunderstood?

You can set the recording time in Media Center, and then close it. The Media Center user interface does not need to be running in order for a recording to start. The recordings are done by a background service.

You really should look into the MCE Standby Tool that was linked in post #2.

MCE Standby Tool (MST) sets all the stuff you need, including "away mode". What does away mode do? Well, basically... it allows your computer to run even when no "human" is using it. So, if a recording is in progress, or an extender is connected, the computer can enter "away mode". This mode is really not much different than full-power (aka "on") except that the video output is turned off. But, it's important for Media Center to be able to run in away mode.

Then, when the recording is finished (or the extender disconnects), the PC goes to sleep after the timeout period (which defaults to 10 minutes).

It will wake again 5 minutes before the next scheduled recording. This gives enough time for everything to initialize, including tuners, hard drives, network interface, etc.

Here are a few examples (assuming that away mode is enabled as it is by MST):

The last user interaction is at 20:50 (keyboard/mouse/IR-remote activity, an extender connection, and several other types of network connections are considered as user interaction). A recording is scheduled to start at 21:00. The PC won't go to sleep, but may enter away mode if there is no further user interaction. This is because the 10 minute timeout hasn't expired before the 5-minute pre-recording period.

The last user interaction is at 20:30. A recording is already in progress. The PC enters away mode at 20:40.

The PC wakes for a recording at 19:55. The recording begins at 20:00. The recording ends at 21:00. There are no more recordings scheduled for the next 15 minutes, and there has been no user interaction (or extender/network connections) in the preceding 10 minutes. The PC goes into standby at 21:10.

MCE Standby Tool (MST) will automatically close Media Center when the PC goes into standby/away mode, if you choose that option and use the active features of MST (which means, don't uninstall it).

I've downloaded the tool ( not tried it yet).
I wanted to stop WMC from starting on Boot, but it doesn't show in Startup.

How did you prevent it from Starting Up at Boot?

Never mind- I just deleted it from taskbar, rebooted and and now it's not running.

I've downloaded the program, but I must still be using wrong settings, and I've tried many.

The comp will still not go to sleep after recording - waited for up to a half hour.

Have you tried pressing the "Default" button in each of the tabs in MCE Standby Tool? Doing so will set everything to defaults.
