Hey guys... new to this forum so please be nice... haha

anyway I'm working on my friend's laptop, its a Toshiba Satellite P305D. he just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and the only problem is that when booting up, it will sit at the welcome screen for up to two minutes. the strange thing is that it does this BEFORE it gets to the login screen, it just sits there with the pretty blue screen with "Windows 7 Ultimate" on the bottom... nothing on screen showing activity, or now HDD activity either... any ideas?

Its the upgrade. Clean install and reformat the drive, imaging vista before hand if you have the right edition or using Macrium Reflect Free if you don't as a backup.

Welcome Gtsinc

How about trying a clean boot to diagnose the problem.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

thanks... I did a clean boot, and it no longer hangs on that screen, so I will go thru the services and figure out which one makes it do that

and I'm trying to avoid a clean install because my friend is rather dense when it comes to computers, and the amount of time and explaining to him that would ensue is what I'm trying to avoid haha

I am glad that my suggestion seems to be working, but I must agree with frostmourne. Save a little time now, with the clean install will cost a lot later on. I would have suggested it, but I missed it, in your post. So many use the term upgrade incorrectly. I would suggest that you try to do a clean install if possible. We would be very happy to supply the reading material and information to help you.

All the best.

I will get everything that I think can help you.

When I installed windows 7, I used this forum and read this tutorial
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html?filter[2]=General Tips

In addition, although not mentioned here, I went to youtube, to see the actual procedure. It was so much more comforting to know what was about to happen and what the next screen should look like.

If you have any questions, comments or problems post. You are with friends at the Seven Forum.
