Slow Copy/Transferring of files

I'm transferring all of my old backed up data and software from my main drive to the second drive that is installed directly to my MB via SATA.

I get about 33-45MBps trasfer speed which to me is a little slow. In XP I could do it much faster.

I've done the TCP tweaks I found online, but doesn't seem to do much. Can someone tell me if there's any way to make file transfer much faster and what the typical speed someone should be getting?

I also found a software given free by MS that is called RichCopy, is that any good?

Why would the false network tweaks work on an internally connected HDD? The speeds you are getting are just right for the drive. A mechanical HDD only gets high speeds in small burst. If you are wanting faster speeds get Solid State Drives.

What I am confused about...Windows XP never told you how fast it was transferring...How do you know it was faster?

I just knew it was faster because I've timed it myself on how many minutes it took to transfer the exact same files between the same HDDs.

I still have my old XP Pro OS backed up as a bootable drive that I swap in and out when I want to compare the two system.

I do plan on switching to SSDs once the price of the 500GBs drops or they announce 1TB are out at a reasonable price.

If you're saying the speeds I am getting is normal, that I'll take your word for it and leave it as is. Thanks

Did you take into account that Windows XP closes down the transfer window before the data is fully written to disk? Starting with Windows Vista, it verifies the file was written to disk before terminating. (Part of the transactional capabilities of NTFS introduced in Vista.)

Wasn't aware of that I don't think, but thanks for the info. I guess I'm still tyring to get used to moving into a new home.

Last question, is it also normal in Windows 7 when you're copying over large files makes surfing the net and running Windows Explorer lag?

No that doesn't sound normal...at least not when using Windows Explorer to do the transfer. Might be possible if it is spawning multiple threads to transfer multiple files at once. Or either an antivirus or an Explorer extension is being disruptive by scanning the files.

You're right, my antivirus has real time scanning and that is what I just found in the Processes section. Going to disable it and see what happens.
