Slow Death for Windows Vista - Packaged Software End of Sales Reached

October 22nd, 2010 was a non-event for Windows Vista, with Microsoft busy celebrating the 1 year anniversary of Windows 7.

But fact is that the date marked an important milestone for the successor of Windows XP, namely Packaged Software End of Sales.

As of October 22, per the new lifecycle changes introduced by the Redmond company, sales of boxed versions of Vista were discontinued, almost three years after the OS hit store shelves.

Nobody noticed, and furthermore, there’s hardly anyone fighting the software giant on the decision to stop selling Vista, as they did for Windows XP.

By comparison, XP was available for purchase from December 31, 2001 to June 30, 2008, almost 7 years, and more than double compared to Vista.

In fact, customers were still able to buy new OEM PCs preinstalled with Windows XP as of October 22nd, 2010.

I still think Vista was the much better OS. Vista ran fine on my system while i had heaps of problem with XP. Vista is by far the most underrated OS of all time, half the people who bag it out have never even tried it.

+1 Vista always ran fine for me. My first Vista machine was a Dell that came with XP installed but qualified for Vista upgrade. This was before I understood about clean installs so I just upgraded from XP to Vista and it still ran great.

As much as Vista was hated undeservedly for the most part, I think its legacy is shown in the fact that it formed the basis for Windows 7 and what a great OS with great reception it turned out to be.

I personally really liked Vista and preferred it to XP as it was more stable and was actually the first (and so far only) release of Windows (at least for me) where I did not have to change the theme on it at all as I thought the out of the box experience was perfect.

Vista did receive a lot of bad rep from people who'd never tried it. My Mum even turned around to me one day and said Vista is rubbish and I knew for a fact she's never tried it and only uses her laptop to check emails and Facebook.

Ditto. I had heard so much negative stuff about it I was really leery when I replaced my computer and it had Vista on it. It wasn't even close to being the dog I had heard.

I still use my Vista Ultimate 64-bit....
It's one of my favorite OS's.

I really liked Vista, and still do, and probably will go back to it at some point as I have too many issues with Windows 7. Was stable enough to run on my laptop

heh heh - my Dad (who is the antithesis of a technically minded individual and who had never used Vista himself) came home from work one day and begun to speak with absolute authority on how bad Vista was.

His source of authority stemmed from "the blokes at work who know a lot about computers" who said that it was rubbish.

After informing him that he should stop listening to those "self proclaimed experts" I promptly wiped his XP and installed Vista.

About a week later, I asked him how he found using Vista. Unsurprisingly, he had no problems and actually liked it

I ran vista on a Q6600 machine with dual vid cards......it deserved every bad review when it first came out. SP1 did wonders and it became an OS worth having. Too bad it took so long to get it working correctly, Further the network piece never worked quite right, too many people had the same "lost conection" issue that it was commonly recognized. Having to run a repair on the connection is a poor fix.
Window 7 fixed this and many other issues......that said Vista did get a bad rap after SP1 and most people who put it down now probably used pre-SP1 and never tried it again (I really can't blame them, it was a POS until SP1 even on very good hardware).

I still have my Vista HD and occasionally log into the OS to do updates and play around a little. I actually liked Vista, and obviously would still be running it had it not been for Win 7.

Overall I had very little issues with Vista x64 once I updated/upgraded a few hardware and software items.

In a funny kind of way Vista feels a little more sophisticated than Win 7. On the other hand Windows 7 to me feels like Vista lite, but in a good way.

Anyways I like Vista, but much prefer Windows 7

I, of course, concur - except with your preference....
I would prefer my Win 7 lappy with Vista on it. However it is not my intention to do that.
I must use Win 7...I must use Win 7...I must use Win7..........

LOL.... I must say though that once I had 7 up and running, I kind of forgot I had Vista.

With Vista, once I got it up and running, XP was a distant memory. Though I still have my XP HD.... just in case

I've got 7 and Vista running side by side right now.

I agree that 7 seems like Vista Lite as someone stated earlier, and I agree that is a good thing.

Can't wait for 8 if they keep progressing like this.

I, too, liked Vista. I even made the move from XP in May 2008 to Vista Home Premium x86... never regretted it. I even tried it on a P4 3GHz with 2GB of 566MHz DDR2 RAM with an ATi Radeon X600 Pro one day after its release and wow... it ran so fine. I even know people who prefers Vista over 7 >_>

Vista was a good OS and never caused me any issues like many people said. Bad media attention gave it a bad reputation and people trying to install it on old XP hardware then claiming it was bad.

I had my share of problems with XP but it got better after each SP, started using Vista after SP1 and didn't have many problems.
Switched to Vista 64bit and liked it even more.

Now Win7 has been great from the beta.

All things considered I like them all, don't think I'll be going back though.
