Slow Death for Windows Vista - Packaged Software End of Sales Reached

Personally, I never really had any major gripes with Vista, I quite liked it. My problem with Vista, was that it just never really grabbed me and shook me about and said "Hell Yeah! This is the way an OS should be!"

Windows 7 does this. Fair enough, I'm a (recently semi-retired) active member on what is obviously a site that generally attracts people who like Windows 7. Honestly though, if i'd tried Ubuntu before I tried 7, Windows would have lost me forever. As it is, I love 7, and anything else just seems cold and pale in comparison.

Frankly if W8 goes cloud, I'm going to be as attached to 7 and the XP fanboys are attached to XPired now.

Back on topic now: Vista, I salute you, you were my stepping stone to W7, and by learning to use you, using 7 was like slipping into my favourite pair of jeans, it just felt right.

For the most part, I disliked Vista, for various reasons. One, with was the worst of then all was its speed. It as slow and most of the time was unresponsive. A real resource hog. I have had Windows XP Home,Windows Vista Home, and Windows 7 Ultimate on this same computer which was made in 2003-2004.
Windows XP - Boot time and shutdown was as fast as simply snapping your fingers, but had a slight slowdown when going through files.
Windows Vista - I loaded it at first thinking that I would see the beauty of Vista from what I saw of screen-shots before begging my parents for it. I was disappointed to find that this ol' rig needed a new video card with WDDM drivers to run the aero interface, and worst of all it was very slow and unresponsive, I got a lot of "(Not Responding)" on nearly all the windows I got. And it's boot-up and shut-down time suffered as well.
Windows 7 - Clean and pristine. I have gotten over the aero interface and love Windows 7. It's boot-up time was about 20 seconds faster than Vista and shut-down was almost a minute faster. It doesn't hog resources like Vista and when going through documents they are there right away which was the only thing XP lacked.
Over all, Microsoft had ups with XP, downs with Vista, and hopefully another up with 7 if it continues to do as well as it currently does.
And for all of you Vista haters, keep in mind that Windows 7 was built off of almost the exact same platform as Vista.

You didn't try to install Vista in a 512 MB machine, did you? that was the main reason why I ended up downgrading systems from Vista to XP... ther were trying to run a heavier OS over a low spec machine (celeron processors + 512 MB RAM + SIS VGAs which sucked) Comparing 7 with Vista (at least in my case) 7 is way faster, but even 7 needs at least 1 GB of RAM (talking about x86 architecture)... I always wonder why every version neds more to run... but I guess that is technology issues at the end...

The biggest problem with any opperating system lies between the keyboard and the chair.

Like most of you I have been using windows in various guises for years, I love my NT2000 laptop, I have an old Emachine 512mb Ram, 10gb HD running ME and I still use it to test things....vista the same, I have a dual boot vista/XP pro, most of the percieved problems come when people mis-install or remove things, change settings they don't understand, try to edit and render 1080p on low end shop bought systems, because the advertising said it could edit video - ie they don't know there own system specs (I am of course refering to OEM shop bought) or read minimum system requirements - I am always turning PC's away that are slow/ unresponsive or the graphics are flickering and advising people that they need to upgrade ram/video etc, no matter what OS is in the box.

I love W7, ithink it's probably the best OS Microsoft have lauched, but to slag Vista off is really missing the point of where the problem lies.

Well put, the PIBCAK issues get blamed on a lot of other things.

I don't mind if someone 'just doesn't like' an OS, componet or brand, but no need to go to extremes on the subject.

I've said for a long time that vista was under-rated. Sure is nice to see other's think the same. When i said this on another site's forum i was slammed from here to Helsinki! Ran Me and then Xp when i first started ... bought a new Laptop with Vista x64 only because it came with an up-grade offer for when 7 came out. After tweaking it for awhile... it was Great! I think Vistas main number one problem was the build up it got before release. " Vista will do everything you want AND make you breakfast! & fold your clothes" Well, it was buggy to start, and the gap between expectations and reality doomed it from the start. Just recently re-installed it and had fun tweaking it again.

Having said all that, I'm using Win7 now and will PROBABLY use it exclusively. theres just too many of the "little" things that i have come to depend on/love about it.

Vista - You deserved better.

It seems slagging Vista became the fashionable thing to do, most people had no real reason or experiences with it and just jumped on the bandwagon.

Have seen many other sites where they say how bad it is and in the next line or post admit they never have used it.

In all honesty though - the same could be said for the majority of OSX bashing.

'Never used it - but it sucks'.

But some how Vista bashing - that vogue was opened to a whole raft of people who quite frankly had no business having any right to an opinion on anything technical.

"By gum, dat dere fancy typewriter has a tee-vuh attached to et. And lookie, it's running summing called Vista. I don't rightly knows about dose fancy-pants typewriter thingamabobs - but goddamn, I sure as heck know that Vista is rubbish".



And just as bad - Linux users thinking that calling Windows / Win-doze is witty. Same as M$ blah blah.

I am sure that there is nothing wrong with 7 at all - many people like it, but it is what I have got, I can't afford 7, and so my perfectly working Vista is not worth upgrading!

Good riddins i say. I used it for a bit, realized it was pants and went back to XP. still cant stand vista. was updateing me mas laptop last night, new AV, got rid of some stuff and unistalled a load of other useless things! its a nightmare compared to 7!

And as stated above its good it got such bad rep cause it was more or less a beta for 7!

Seven is deadly!
