Many Thanks,

Please go to Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test and post back with your results from there.

What download link are you using to download Ubuntu?

Are you torrenting at all?

Who is your ISP?

Are you on ADSl or cable or...?

Sorry for a ll the questions ;).

I am using Wireless, via a wireless adapter.

Download, 1.04mb/s
Upload 0.61mb/s
Ping 105ms

My isp is with the Utility warehouse, which also do gas and electricity :)

I know Vuze, is a torrent application, but you can also use it to download things from other sites, i don't use it for nothing illegal, just free ware software.

The thing is, it only does it with my pc, my laptop is fine :S

Thanks, Matt

What does Speed Test.net say about the other computer's connection (the one you haven't already tried it on).

Did you torrent Ubuntu or use a direct download link?

From which location do you download Ubuntu from?

There are lots of direct download links, some of which may be very slow or fast etc.

Could you give me some more detail on your network.

Your desktop is connected via a USB WiFi dongle to your Wireless router correct?

Question 1) What is the make and model of your router?

Question 2 How is the laptop connected?

'Your desktop is connected via a USB WiFi dongle to your Wireless router correct?'

Yep that is correct

The make of the router is NETGEAR DG834G V4

The laptop is connected via its wireless.

How far away are the laptop and desktop from the router? Are there any large pieces of metal or large obstructions between the router and the desktop?

How old and what make is the USB dongle used to connect to the internet?

How old is the computer and does it have USB 2.0 or 1.1 ports? (I'm pretty sure it has 2.0 if it can run 7 but I just want to make sure)

Take a look at Belkin and follow what it says on screen.

This will help you find the most up to date driver for your USB dongle.

Also try restating your PC and router and see what difference that makes.

Unfortunately I will not be able to offer support again for a few hours.

I wish you the best of luck. ;)

Did you try or find the appropriate driver for your dongle?

Have you tried a different USB port?

Another thing you may want to try is, if possible, plugging your PC in via ethernet to the router.

This should get the same, if not a better speed, than your laptop.

You may also want to try disabling your built in network card, it may be that for some reason it is slowing the connection down.

When your connection started to slow down had you recently installed any new programs or had any system changes etc?

Does the usb wireless dongle work correctly on the laptop? (remember to temporarily disable the built in wireless card)

If you need any help doing any of these things please ask.

No problem, I'm glad I could help and that you got it working. :)

As you are new to the forum I thought you might like to know how to mark threads as solved as well as the uses of some of the other buttons, you may already know how to do this though so I just wanted to make sure ;).

To the top right of this post you will see 3 icons. An orange (+), a set of scales and a red and white warning triangle.

The orange (+) or blue (-) denotes whether a user is on or offline (orange = on, blue = off).

The scales are used to give rep points; click this button if someone has helped you significantly or solved your queries (only give this to posts that you think really deserve it).

The red and white warning triangle is used to denote either an abusive post OR to mark a thread as solved (just put solved in the box that comes up and the admins or moderators will mark it solved).

This thread's already marked solved (whether by you or moderator I don't know).
