slow Network copying >12mbs

we are seeing painfully slow network copies from our windows home server too both windows 7 machines they are duplicate hardware for the 7 machines

server dual zeon 2.0ghz 4 gig ram
dual-port intel gig card teamed

Network switch 3com superstack 3 10/100 24 port layer 3

computer is

Amd 64 3200+ 2.0 GHZ
1.25 gigs of ram
32 bit os installed

windows 7 build 7600
NIC Reatek RTL8169/8110 gig GBE

average copy speed traverling 12 feet of cable and 1 switch is 7-12mbs

whats changed? check the event viewer on the PC's and the server. what was the earlier tranfer speed?

12mb/s is almost the maximum for 100mbit network.

You could hardly do any better.

1 byte is 8 bits.

100 megabit /8 = 12.5 megabyte

PS. upgrade to gigabit lan will get you 50 to 70mb/s, but you'll need gigabit cards and gigabit switch.

From 3 different networking sites [FONT=verdana, geneva, helvetica] The term "bps" specifies network bandwidth in bits per second. The term "Bps" specifies network bandwidth in bytes per second. [/FONT]

100Mb=100 megabit?

Net speeds are always mentioned in bits.

Regular card is 100 megabit = 12.5 megabytes.
Gigabit cards is 1000 megabit = 125 megabytes.

All theoretical of course, because you'll never reach those speeds.
In that light 12mb/s average is a wonderful score.

I am not calling you a liar, but 30-40 megabyte per second is physically impossible with a 100 megabit switch in between.

You were probably looking at 30-40 megabits per second, not megabytes.
Which is a resonable average speed for 100mbit.

The confusion is only natural, many people mix them up.

Manufacturers, ISP's and network operators talk in bits.

Windows reports the card as 100mbit also, but transfers are always shown in bytes, kbytes or mbytes.

The switch you quoted is a 100 mbps switch, so that limits your transfer rates to 100 mbps as the NICs in your computers will operate at 100 mbps not 1 gbps.

Networks don't operate at 100% utilization, so your actual transfer rate will be less than 100 mbps. I recently did some testing of transferring very large files across a 100 mbps network and found network usages of 40% to 60%, as reported by Task Manager. 60% of 100 mbps is 60 mbps. At 8 bits per byte, that would be about 7.5 million bytes per second.

TCP/IP packets have 18 bytes of overhead in each 1518 byte packet, so 7.5 million bytes of usage corresponds to about 7.4 MB of data.

(In all these numbers, "million" means 10^6 and not 1024^2.)

If you want maximum transfer rates, get a gigabit switch that supports large packets and enable large packets on both computers and in the switch.

Even the "get a gigabit switch" was mentioned.
