Slow performance on newly installed Windows 7

Hi All,

I have a laptop that has been upgraded to Windows 7 from vista. In the beginning everything was fine and things worked really fast. However, for past few months I have had dreadful performance. Whenever I check my CPU is at 100% and it takes ages to do anything. Even opening a chrome tab takes 5 minutes. I tried doing driver checks to confirm nothing was wrong.

After trying hard, I just re-installed Windows 7 but no luck. Then I formatted my hard disk and installed windows 7 again. Now it works fine but I do get the extreme slowness sometimes.

While doing all of this, one thing I noticed that if I was to put my laptop to sleep and bring back it might start working absolutely fine. Before reformatting it worked 50% of times. Now again it has worked whenever I tried. I wonder if this is a CPU power setting issue? I have already set the power settings to have full performance.

The CPU is Intel dual core T5300 1.73 GHz and 2 GB RAM.

Any help will be really great

Thanks
Neeraj

Do you have SP1 installed and all Windows updates up to date?

You also need to identify via task manager what Is using the most CPU and Memory during those times of slowness.
Once you know that then you can look further into things.

No ideas on that sleep issue sorry.

Cheers

I do not have sp1 installed yet. However, right now my laptop is working 100 times better than previous install of windows 7 (which I formatted few days back). When I last had the issue, even when nothing was running it was taking 100% cpu. If I remember correctly svchost.exe was taking most of the cpu.

One thing to do in this kind of situations is to check yor cpu temperature, to see if it's running well, because sometimes high temparuters might cause system slowness. Anorhe thing i have noticed is your Ram memory. You have 2 gigs, try upgrade to 3, because windows 7 is recomended to work on 3 gigs.

Not sure about cpu temperature, however, it seems to have problem even when I first started the laptop. So I doubt it is the issue.

I get the point 3 GB is recommended. However, why it works fine now, when it is running slow mem usage is no more than 1 GB and my other PC, with similar config is running absolutely fine.

This could be the beginnings of a HDD failure. Check your laptops website for brand of hard drive installed. Then go to that makers website and run there hard drive diagnostic tool and see if it passes.
