i work for a very small company, and i've been using an old P3 with 256mb ram for more than a year now. i finally talked my boss into getting an upgrade. all i know is it's going to be a P4 with 1gb ram. they're putting XP on it, but boss says i can install whatever i want.

should i bother with Windows 7? all i use it for is web browsing (many sites i need to access use a lot of flash which my current machine can't handle) and basic MS Office stuff.

i know i won't get any sexy aero goodness, but as long as i have basic functionality, i'll be happy. anything but XP again!

Seven is really nice, and should run just fine on that machine. If you haven't used it yet, and you hated XP, then you will love seven!

I wanted to put it on my old laptop (pos thing barely works with XP on it) but it doesn't have a CD drive, and the attachable one wont boot from a DVD......

well, i'm running RC1 at work now :)

my WEI is 2.6, but it runs Aero just fine! so far, my average workload is hovering around 60-65% of the machine's 1gb ram. i'm very impressed!

with some modifications aero works as well. It performs as decent as XP.
Even slightly more responsive in web and media player

well, i'm running RC1 at work now :)

Good for you! Just for some advice, if the PC gets slow and sluggish, try the Windows 7 Basic or Windows Classic themes, they'll help. Also, XP can be made to look like anything! These days there are so many "transformation pack" programs out there it's even tough to find out which one is the best! Anyway, since you're saying you've got no problems with RC1 for now, consider the sentances you've just read (about XP) useless...

Win 7 will run in 1gig (I have been doing it since win 7 beta) but it depends on what else you have to run on it. If you're running a big database for work it might stutter. But in my experience if it runs xp it will run win 7 with basic functionality. Some here has win 7 intalled on a 386 with 256 ram and does e-mail etc.

Good luck

Ken
