I work in IT, and one of my end users has an issue where she has a number of files and folders in the desktop folder of her user directory, but only about 1/2 to 2/3 of them are actually showing up on her desktop. I have ruled out the following:
- I have set the desktop to auto-arrange to see if there were any items off the screen.
- The number of items that are showing doesn't even fill the desktop, so there aren't any items off the screen.
- I have verified that the "Show desktop items" option is selected.
- I have verified that none of the items are marked as hidden.
- This is a brand new machine with a fresh image, so there are no viruses on it.
- I have also tried rebooting, with no luck.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Were these dragged to the Desktop Favorites link in Explorer bar as I have had these not show up on Desktop in the past?

Best to browse in via C to User's Desktop to see that they are there.

Also, are you using that exact path in the image or does it have User Desktop folder redirected to OneDrive or elsewhere like mine?

I just upgraded her to a new computer (old one was on Win7 as well), and she didn't have this issue on her old PC. When I copied her data, I copied it from C:\Users\Username\Desktop on her old PC, to the same directory on her new PC. I don't believe any of it was any kind of Favorites data, it was just typical data.

Try moving the files that do not show up on Desktop to Documents, then move them back.

Confused

"Try moving the files that do not show up on Desktop to Documents, then move them back."

What is the logic behind this?

Probably some kind of ownership thing. Since the files came from another computer they may have had different ownership attributes. By simply placing them in the user's documents folder they seemed to have acquired the correct attributes that are needed.

That's just my guess.

Another theory I had right when I read the first post was that sometimes files and folders don't all show up depending on the folder's display settings and how those items are arranged. I've had a massive amount of files and folders and for some reason only part of them showed up, but if I arranged the files and folders differently I'd see them all. I don't think this was a permission issue since these files and folders were created on the machine its self. There could have been something else going on though.
