My XFX 4850 is now struggling even to play Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2. Even at lowest resolution/details!

I'm fairly new to this online gaming and gaming in general. In my day it was "Pong" and "Atari" and let's not forget "Electronic Quarterback" hand held.....lol. I had a XFX 4770 and then I got a PowerColor 4870 (a gift). There was a big difference between those two cards, in performance, physical size and power connections. Now I enjoy just about every modern game out there. As to answer your question; I don't think the newer games being geared towards the high end PC's as much as it has to do with all the data that is being added in these games. This in-turns requires a more sophisticated GPU to render all that data to its peak levels. This is just how technology evolves....it's worse than trying to "keep up with the Jones's" as the old saying goes. Especially in this industry and it can be a real expensive habit/hobby if one tries to.

It's got nothing to do with high end PC's. It's how the games are ported.

If you want still play modern games ~30 FPS limited to DX9 with blurry textures without AA -buy a console.

Well yeah, seeing that the "Recommended" requirements call for at least a 4800 series card, the 4850 might be a little underpowered for it. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 PC Requirements Out - Softpedia

You could try lowering the game settings so that the card doesn't have to struggle with the high settings of the game.

The other solution I hate to say is to get a more powerful video card if you're concerned with performance. The 4850, while a good card for its time, is a bit long in the tooth and was never really that strong of a card anyway. I still have one in my old system.

Right now I have a 4890 and it does well with the games I play - Fallout New Vegas (though the game itself is a crash fest), Dragon Age, Metro 2033, but I'll be upgrading around the first of the year as the newer games will require more horse power. It's the nature of gaming.

BTW some people have complained that games don't take advantage of the high end hardware so....

Although this is a pet peeve of mine too, I can't really blame them: you realize how many generations of gfx hardware just flew by during the last couple years right? The advancements have been excessive imho Yeah, I know it's a good thing, but it's annoying not to be able to buy something and expect it to remain in the top tier for at least a year).

Back in the 90s I pretty much not cared what went in the box. Now, it's like I have to re-check the gfx comparison lists every other month or so if I want to stay current with the news. It's crazy.

It might not be or remain top tier but that doesn't mean they can't play today's games.

My 4890 isn't/wasn't a top tier graphics card and was released in April of 2009, yet it plays everything I need it to play for now.

Is it going to win some benchmarking tests.... no, but I'm not playing benchmarks, I'm playing games.

While I am going to upgrade to a DX11 card early next year, it's not nothing I have to do right now for current games. Metro 2033 is a DX11 game but it runs just fine for me on my 4890 (DX10).

By the time I replace the 4890 it'll be two years old, and will replace the 4850 in my Q6600 system.... which is still capable of playing today's games

Granted it can't do like 800 frames per second, but it does get the job done. You asked me about game play with Metro 2033 - other then in-game bugs, the graphics and performance is pretty good. Do I have the game on uber high.... no.... but they're not at the lowest settings either

When my 4890 met Just Cause 2 ...

Then again, I am addicted to eye candy. Apart from racing games, I'm the type of gamer that usually opts for eye candy + choppier gameplay over lowering details to achieve smoother play

Trust me, I with you on that, but luckerly I've been able to find happy mediums. Learned that with Crysis

Anyways I never said the card was the most powerful, but it does do a good job with the games I play. If you've played Metro and look at the settings I'm using, they're about avarage. Obviously I can't play in DX11 mode though

it's to do with screen resolution sygnus21.

i play at 1920x1080 which is about 17% more pixels as your 1680x1050

so my games run 17% slower than yours, and it's noticable.

it's inevitable that games overtake grafix cards, and it's a good thing all in all - i just wish it wasn't so expensive - i wish i knew a rich compulsive upgrader who could hand-me-down his old stuff every few months...

You are right, resolution is a factor. Forgot about that for those running higher than 1680x1050.
