Hi

I have a vaio and it has had windows 7 64 from new, and just recently it has been freezing with no errors.

What happens: when i turn it on it starts normally and loads windows, then aftr about 1 minute it locks up as if it is trying to open something. The light on the laptop is solid orange as if it is busy doing something, but if i open task manager it says 5% cpu usage and the ram is using only 1.5 gigs.

If i leave the computer on for 1-2 hours it will un freeze and be totally normal again.

It did it once at first and i removed the program that i thought was causing it and it didnt happen again for a few days until i updated windows.

I dont have any restores from when it was working good so what can i do to fix this?

Thanks

Dan

Have you checked the Event Log (Control Panel/System) ? May provide a more definitive cause.

What is your antivirus ? May try to disable momentarily to determine effect. Recent full scan ?

Also, may want to run the Vaio Care analysis if available.

I use the security essentials that comes with windows. I have ran a scan with it and also with spybot and not found anything. I have also ran a registery checker and it didnt make any difference.

I opened the event log and there are alot of events like these below:

The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Reason : CPU resources are over-utilized.
Diagnosis : A sharp degradation in Desktop Window Manager responsiveness was observed.

The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Scenario : The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded.

I have attached the log file and will run vaio care now.

Most do not recommend using a "registry checker."

Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable than I will offer advice on the CPU issue.

In the interim, click on "tutorials" at the top of the page and search different troubleshooting methods.

You have a powerful system that should not be having this issue. Personally, if the issue can't be solved after research, I would consider a backup and clean reinstall of Windows 7.

If no other replies, bump your thread to the top of the forum.

Thanks for the advise

Ill try looking at some tutorials see if I can solve it.

I just saw that Vaio Care has an option "reinstall applications and drivers" will this leave all my programs and data as it is? Could this maybe help?

Should state in the tutorial if it will effect your data. You can actually do the same with the Win7 installation CD if you have it.

Work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums which lead up to possibly running Factory Recovery or a superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

If you're unsure you want to Clean Reinstall yet then try Factory Recovery to see if the problems resolve. If not then follow the steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall of the OS which solves many problems brought on by the heavy load of factory bloatware and useless utilities which have better versions built into Win7.

The resource contention error can also be googled to see how others have resolved it. You might need a Disk Check or to run HD Diagnostics to confirm the HD integrity, or run a Clean Boot to shrug off all of the freeloaders on your RAM/CPU.
