Sound doesn't work :-/

Wish I had a better description but ....
My sound worked and now it doesn't.

I have a Asustek p6x58d premium board and I'm using the on-board sound. In sound I have "rear panel" as default. In rear panel properties I have it enabled. When I play any sound playback (in sound) shows the rear panel as getting a signal but no matter what jack I plug into I get no sound. My speakers do work.

In NIVDIA control panel it had audio going to the HDMI capable device (my monitor) and I have since turned it off. I rebooted but still no sound.

Device manager: Under sound it shows 2 NVIDIA devices and one high definition audio device. All are working correctly.

EDIT: the volume mixed shows sound happening in the device (rear panel) and shows the application (ffox) getting signal as well.

Is the "Speakers" set as the default playback device? If not, that is probably the problem. Check the playback device in Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel, Playback section.

One other note, if you only have "High Definition Audio Device" rather than the actual hardware sound driver (e.g. Realtek) that says that you only have the generic, basic function, Windows installed driver. If this is the case get the correct sound driver.

Another possibility, the speakers. Are they plugged in (AC power)?
