Sound is really quiet

I have tried setting volume to max on all devices and using loudness equalization. The audio is still pretty quiet, and youtube videos are even quieter. I could of sworn it was louder at one point but I can't find anything to adjust. A flat DB modifier would be great.

first check your drivers


Type device manager in search

Go to the audio tab. Is your sound card listed? dows it have a yellow triangle on it? Are there any other "unknown" drivers that do have yellow triangles on them?

I have verified my sound drivers via system information / device manager, and they are determined as up to date. I have no unknown or drivers marked with a yellow triangle.

Maybe I just hit a row of videos with low audibles on youtube?
EX: YouTube - Good Size: The Pineapple Song
BTW, I found this song trying to identify lyrics for someone, but you have to admit it's a little bit catchy.

It's only spiking my sound meter to 50% at most.

The sound is fairly loud here!

If you right click the Microsoft speaker icon in the taskbar and select playback devices you probably see speaker as the default device? Left click once on the default device then select properties... what tabs do you seeing in the window that opens/

Do you have "Levels" and "Enhancements"

I do have the Levels and Enhancements options, I already made sure levels was maxed and I had already tried toggling Loudness equalization before posting.

The speakers are built in laptop speakers, but my games, my iTunes, few other things max the volume meter out easily and are noticeably louder.

That being said it may just be isolated to Firefox, but I have never heard of such a thing. But just in case I had tried toggling allow applications to take exclusive control.

I'll join this thread because I'm having similar problems.

- bog standard cheap Labtech headset works fine on XP on a Dell laptop.
- same headset plugged into a new PC with Windows 7 acts as if the mic needs a preamp. I need mic volume 100% and boost +20dB to get reasonable input levels using Windows 7 Sound Recorder. I cannot make Skype work at all - need +30bD boost to pass Skype's Call test, but noise is terrible and called party can't hear me if I try a real call.

Sound card is Realtek High Definition Audio and driver is up to date.

I think it has to do with windows 7 and how it uses sound for specific applications. My Media Player Classic is pretty quiet too. Luckily I only use it to watch videos over my tv / surround so it gets amplified a bit.

I resolved this annoying issue on mine!

Media Player Classic
- Options > Internal Filters > Audio Switcher
- Uncheck "Normalize"

Volume got louder the second I hit Apply. Now it's more in-line with other media players on the same system playing the same video.

It looks like this thread is not about Media Player Classic specifically, but I would like to leave this post up if permitted because I'm sure others will come across it the same way I did.

Are the hardware volume controls on the laptop synched with the software volume controls of the speakers? Meaning, if you turn up the hardware volume controls, does it also turn up the software volume controls. If they're not synched, adjusting the hardware volume buttons may do the trick.

If you're using Realtek Audio Manager [located in the Notification Icon Tray] you can search for Volume Control and scroll through till you find Adobe Flash Player. Make sure that sound is all the way up.

Adobe Flash player is the way to view videos on youtube, etc. And your games don't use Adobe Flash player.

New problem...

So I went from having a whisper of a sound to only having system sounds (now those are pleasantly loud). I can see on the Volume mixer that it's registering that something's playing on youtube, but there's nothing coming out of the built-in speakers. Ideas?

so, I know this is seriously outdated and all but I had been having the same problems and none of the solutions I found worked, I did 2 clean installs of windows to fix it which worked the 1st time but not the 2nd time, the fix that worked for me was to go in to HD audio manager and switch to 5.1 which had been changed for some reason

This is how I fixed my problem:
Right click on the speaker in taskbar (the one from windows, not another one)
Clicked on "Volume control options"
Checked all the boxes: "All the devices currently playing sound", "The default communication device", Sound devices: "Speakers"
Pressed OK and now everything is WAY louder, like it used to be. When volume is at 20%, it is as loud as 100% while having the problem.

I know this is OLD OLD OLD but noting here worked for me but the following did help . . .

In windows7 go to Sounds > go to Playback
Pick speakers as output device
Go to Properties > At Levels (check it's at 100%)
Go to Enhancments > enable Loudness Equalisation > Click [Apply]

Should be much louder now...
