My friend's laptop has a weird problem. It was running vista fine, sound worked and everything. One day, the internal speakers randomly stopped emitting any sound. However, they do make sound effect sounds while the computer is booting... so they're not broken.

I figured it was a software problem, so he just reformatted and installed 7. Same problem. Makes the booting up noises, "Gamers Republic... BOOM", obviously coming from the internal speakers. Once into windows, in the HD control panel, it shows as something being plugged into the green analog input, but nothing is plugged in. So, no matter what, windows is detecting that he has speakers plugged into his laptop so it refuses to use his internal speakers.

His only option is to use headphones / external speakers.

Drivers are up to date.

Any ideas?

PC - Asus G50vt

OS - Windows 7 RC 64bit

Ram - 4 gigs

CPU - honestly, no idea. Core 2 duo something.

Sound - "Realtek HD Audio" ... That's all I know.

Try an Ubuntu Live CD and see if you get same issue, to rule out if its a Windows problem, or just a general HW issue.

I just got to my friend's house, using his laptop right now. It seems his laptop is stuck in "headphone mode", as in, it constantly detects something being plugged into his line-in jack. I went into regedit and changed ForceDisableJD to 01, and now his internal speakers are working great! However, that overwrites all detection of jack input, so now headphones don't work.

I'll try an ubuntu CD as soon as i can, but is there anything to try in the mean time?
