Our messaging platform only supports wav files, which makes Sound Recorder in XP an excellent recording tool. For our customers using Vista machines, we instruct them to download a copy of Audicity, which allows them save a record message is a wav format.

My questions is... Will W7 Sound Recorder allow you to save a voice recording in a wav format without having to jump through a bunch of hoops.

Vista really confused our customers because the drop-down asked you to "save as" but it only supports wma.

Sorry, but Sound Recorder in Windows 7 only supports being saved as a WMA file as well.

Yes, however we can simply convert file to WAV using CMD prompt.

Syntax:

"Copy filename.wmv(single space) newfilename.wav/mp3"

It worked for me

You can save in .wav format by starting the program with a parameter...

soundrecorder /file outputfile.wav
You can put this line in a shortcut.

Also, the XP sndrec32.exe will work if you copy it over.

convert wma format to wav in windows 7

It looks, from the postings, that it's possible to convert audio files in windows 7 to wav. I need to do that to import them into audacity for editing.
Can someone dumb it down and tell me how to do that?

I have had success with simply changing the file extension in windows explorer. Recommend a test run first.

Navigate to the folder with the audio file in .wma
Copy the test sample then
Right click and select rename
replace .wma with .wav
press enter

Not the technical best way for file type conversion but it has worked.
