I've tried onboard sound and two separate sound cards (Sound Blaster Audigy and Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGammer). Sound stutters and crackles, eventually crashes completely and goes mute. Seems to worsen the problem after the computer goes into sleep mode and wakes up.

I see numerous complaints in several forums about this issue. Is Microsoft simply not addressing?

It may not be a Windows 7 problem but a driver or some other software that is causing this.

Many problems after standby are caused by device drivers. Update all your device drivers as a start. If your sound is on a shared IRQ that can also be a problem as the sound IRQ is the lowest priority.

Download and run the free DPC Latency checker and see if shows any problem areas. Click Me
