Hi.

I can't get SP1 to install.

Have tried switching off Norton, have also downloaded file from Microsoft site. No joy.

Can anyone help?

Hmmmm, a lot of people are having trouble downloading SP1. (See the OnTheRopes' post above you where I just posted these same tutorials.) And as I said to OnTheRopes, if these tutorials don't solve your specific installation problem, hopefully they will lead you to other tutorials that will help.

From Microsoft - Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

SP 1 - INSTALLATION FAILURES
From Microsoft - Installation of the Service Pack 1 update package for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 fails with "Service pack installation can't continue"

SP 1 – INSTALLATION FAILURE - OF WINDOWS LIVE ESSENTIALS
From Microsoft - Why am I receiving a message about Microsoft Security Essentials or Microsoft Forefront Client Security when installing a service pack?

From Microsoft - re: Microsoft Security Essentials - If you do not have version 1.0.1963.0 or later installed, upgrade using the instructions in KB2254596 (You are prompted to upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials (1.0.1963.0)) , or launch Microsoft Update and install the update or a newer version from there. (Why am I receiving a message about Microsoft Security Essentials or Microsoft Forefront Client Security when installing a service pack?)

Thanks Imperfect1
I have seen these and tried to follow all the instructions but with the same outcome
When trying to load from the downloaded file, it takes ages and appears almost to get there, but still fails with the same error message.
Thanks again.

Disable Norton's fire wall and enable Windows firewall through services. Also make sure you have cleaned all temps.
Unplug any USB devices, such as printer or external hard drive. Try again.

Hello again.

Really frustrating. I have tried everything suggested here apart from the Repair Windows option.

Is it time to repair do you think? Or is it best to wait until a revised SP1 is issued?

Hi Slater. Sorry you are having such a hard time with SP1. I had the same problem and same error code. I am curious if when you run sfc /scannow as an administrator, does it give you a clean bill of health. I've been told that if you cannot get a clean SFC run you will never be able to install SP1. Let us know.
Cheers

Umm. Not sure what could be stopping you now. It looks as thought you have followed all the advice of some very knowledgeable people here with no joy.

Maybe as you said it is time for A Windows Repair run. Keep us informed of your progress, it may help someone else.
Good luck

Very frustrating.

I have tried the system readiness tool, turned off antivirus and antispyware, loaded all other updates and still SP1 fails with Error 0x80004005

Should I now try a Repair using the original Windows 7 disk - will that do anything to my data or programs?

Hello!

One last try. I need to look at your log files. The System Update Readiness Tool only really comes out properly if you look at its log!

Please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here.

Thanks!

Richard

Scan for any malware using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware http://majorgeeks.com/download5756.html Delete anything it finds.
Next, download TFC by Old Timer http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/TFC-Temp-File-Cleaner-OldTimer-file187.html and save it to your desktop.
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

Do you have Windows updates set to automatic (but let me choose)? If not, try that and see if you're offered both SP1 and IE9.
Also, turn UAC on, if turned off.

Jacee

Hi. I tried that. Nothing bad in the malwarebytes check and TFC ran fine, requiring a reboot. Then re-tried SP1 and IE9 and they both failed with the same error message.

Seems odd - I don't have any unusual programs and have turned antivrus and antispyware off each time. Anything else I should try?

Let's see if VEW gives any clues.

Download VEW by Vino Rosso http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your desktop
Double click it to start it Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will need to right click the file and select Run as administrator and click Continue or Allow at the User Account Control Prompt.
Click the check boxes next to Application and System located under Select log to query on the upper left
Under Select type to list on the right click the boxes next to Error and Warning Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 also click the box next to Critical (not XP).
Under Number or date of events select Number of events and type 20 in the box next to 1 to 20 and click Run
Once it finishes it will display a log file in notepad
Please copy and paste its entire contents into your next reply
