Hi there I currently have 2 spanned drives in my pc one is 3x1.5TB and the other is 3x2TB. Just wondering I want change my computer case and would like to know do I have to plug each sata cable in the exact same spot there are now or is it okay to plug them in different spots and windows will recognize them properly. Thanks

Logic tells me that you have to keep the port arrangement. But I have never tried that myself.

I am curious: Why did you span those in the first place. Sounds like a lot of real estate.

What did you use to span the disks?

Mmm.

The safest option is to check which disk is plugged into which SATA port, and then replicate that in your new system. As to how/if Windows recognises them, I'm not entirely sure.

ok and also was wondering if the drives are not spanned does it matter what hard drive plugs into what sata port or will windows detect it all. Thanks

In principle it does not matter into which port non-spanned drives ar plugged in. However, I have noticed, that the windows7 installer seems to look for the disk (first partition) in port0 to place the Bootmgr. It has happend to me that a data partition on my port0 drive ended up as Active partition whilst the OS drive was on port2. Thus I would recommend to place the OS drive on port0.
