I've had my Win 7 almost since new and it's been great since I last did a speed check, but it's started slowing down again so wondering what are the latest downloads to speed things up again....

Thanks for any help :)

Hi Arcadian,

Have you checked what is loaded at Startup and what Services are running?

Just a thought.

You could also try the information given here:

Optimize Windows for better performance

I hope this helps!

Unfortunately back to slow as ever this morning so having Win 10 which is running fine and all files on Win 7 backed up decided to bite the bullet and do a restore to factory condition. Very nervous as I knew it could mean days of replacing everything but went ahead anyway, and was astonished to discover that it's now going faster than I've ever known since I bought it second hand 6 or 7 years ago and with all files and bookmarks in place just as they were originally.

I've no idea why or how but thought I'd pass on the info if anyone's interested, but make sure that everything important is backed up first. Also don't forget what might have worked for me might not necessarily work for others.

1. Enter "reinstall" in the search box bottom left hand corner.

2. Click on "....or reinstall Windows."

2. Then click on "Advanced recovery methods" at the bottom.

3. Finally click on ".....to factory condition"

I am glad you sorted it out Arcadian,

I would strongly suggest that once you have everything installed and running like you want it to that you make a system image, just in case you need to restore in the future. It will save a lot of time having to redo everything again.

Just a thought!

Thanks Paul

You wouldn't think I'd done a factory re-install in about 10 minutes as everything's exactly the same as before which is a huge relief.

By system image do you mean system restore ?

Hi Arcadian,

A system image is a snapshot of your hard drive (where Windows is installed) as it is when you take the snapshot. This includes the OS, Updates, files and programs that are installed. Then if things go wrong you can restore that system image (snapshot) and everything will be as it was when you took the snapshot. You will just need to backup your data first so you can add back any files that have been created/amended between when the snapshot was taken and the restore.

There are several free imaging softwares that you can use including Paragon, Acronis, Macrium, AOMEI etc.

I hope this helps!
