Hi,

I had Win7 on a standard HD, backups and restores just worked fine
using NortonGhost 15 for years.

Now I added a Samsung SSD 830 128GB.
Win7 installed on primary active C: and there is a 2nd logical Partition D:,
skipping the 100MB-Partition.
Everything works great.

I have made several backups using that NortonGhost 15.
However, I am kind of reluctant doing a restore test.
Will it work just the same as on HDs, restoring MBR and all that?
Normally, a partition is deleted before restore.
Is that the same on a SSD and would it effect lifetime?

Normally, I run a defrag on HD before any backup.
SSDs shouldn't be defragmented.
Do I expect any problems doing a restore?

I always use a Boot-CD and backups are stored on a real HD.
The previous Win7 installed on HD run in IDE-mode.
The new installation on SSD runs AHCI-mode.

Hello Bjoern, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes, it'll back up and restore on the SSD the same as a HDD. Minus defragging the SSD of course. :)

Backup & Restore Samsung SSD 840 PRO 512GB

Hello Bjoern, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes, it'll back up and restore on the SSD the same as a HDD. Minus defragging the SSD of course. :)
:geek: I have recently added a Samsung SSD 840 PRO 512GB to my system replacing one of three WDC WD6000HLHX ATA 600 GB Devices. I used it to replace the primary secondary drive (disk 1 in windows). I had no problem cloning it from the original boot disk using Casper 7.
There is an impressive gain in performance now seen by Windows 7 index as 7.9 compared with 5.4 with HDD. The drive works very well.
Unfortunately there is a problem that backup, and system restore fail because Volume Shadow Copy will not open. I can clone with Caspar 7 if I set it to proceed without VSS but this is risky because the system info.DAT file is not copied because in use.
I also found the last Windows update would not complete on the SSD.
There is no lack of memory 24gb installed 20Gb available before starting backup and the same result with or without a page file and with or without AV enabled (Kaspersky 2013). It would seem that the write speed of the SSD is too slow for VSS to function.
I can work around this problem by booting from the primary HDD making sure that it all up to date, using Casper's smart clone to update the SSD and then rebooting to the latter.
From web searches I get the impression that Intel SSD's have the same problem.:sarc:

I have heard Ghost is pretty good but.....

I have for years loved Acronis....

I use and LOVE - Acronis True Image Home 2011 Build 6574

So very reliable too!

So far, not 1 back up image has ever failed.
