Hi i am thinking of upgrading my HDD to a SSD i think 128G should be enough considering i have 750G as my 2nd HDD where can i look for a SSD that will work with my acer 6930g there are so many out there

HDDs and SDDs generally don't have hardware compatibility issues. As long as your machine takes SATA drives (which it most likely does), any SSD should fit fine. Also, 120-128GB will be plenty if all you're going to put on it are the OS and programs. You might even get by with a 60-64GB if your program load is light (and you don't install any more RAM) but I don't recommend it. It's best to leave 20-25% of SSDs unused to prolong life and a 60-64GB SSD could be cutting it close. If you do any serious gaming, even 120-128GB might not be enough. If all you will put on the SSD is no more than 40GB, then a 60-64GB SSD would be alright.

I personally prefer the Samsung 840 Pro series and would recommend the 128GB drive. It gets amongst the best reviews. I know I've been happy with my 128GB 840 Pro. If your budget is tight, the Samsung 840 also gets excellent reviews.

Samsung is coming out with a new series of SSDs called the EVO. They are available for preorder right now. I would suggest not getting one until they've been out for a few months to see how they perform. The Pro series will still the top of Samsung's SSD line.

Stay away from any SSDs using the Sandforce controllers. The Sandforces have had a bad history for reliability and SSDs using them generally do not get as good of reviews as the SSDs that do not use them.

I personally prefer the Samsung 840 Pro. It's one of the top performers and gets great reviews but, naturally, it's one of the most expensive. A less expensive one that still gets great reviews is the Samsung 840, which has a 120GB SSD in its stable.

Any SSD should be compatible. I always buy what's on sale at Newegg. That way I ended up with 7 SSDs of 5 different makes - and they all work.

I caught my 128GB Sammy pro on sale at the Egg a couple of months before I built my machine. I wasn't going to buy it until I was ready to build my machine but the cheap in me couldn't resist a sale. I should buy a spare but I'm too cheap to buy something and let it set around unused, burning off warranty. I could always "restore" my C:\ drive to a spare spinner I have knocking about if the SSD ever dies until I can order in a replacement SSD if push came to shove.

As mentioned any ssd should be compatible. You won't believe the difference it will make :D! I have a Crucial M4 128GB and couldn't be happier with it.

The Crucial M4 works very well for me too. It should definitely be on an shortlist.

:what::what::what:No, no, no! Don't get it from flea bay. A lot of bad stuff gets sold there. Get it from someplace reliable, such as NewEgg. That way, you don't have to worry about getting stuck with a used, abused, and/or dead one and you will get the full manufacture's warranty.

The advice above is spot on. The only thing I have to add is find out what thickness your drives are, they are either 9.5mm or 7mm. Most SSD's now have went to the 7mm standard. Buy from NewEgg, Amazon or Tigerdirect.....stay away from ebay for something like this. I would either get a Samsung 840 Pro or OCZ Vertex 128GB model and rock on.

Tiger Direct is what I use most often. Never a problem with them. They have the Samsung (not pro) on sale now.... along with copies of Windows7 HP and Pro!

How are you going to install the second drive? Normally a laptop has room for one drive, to add a second you need to remove the dvd burner and use a special caddy.

I would be very careful buying a used ssd drive off evil bay.

Move on people! Friends sandforce's performance issues are surely a thing of the past. I have been using the latest ones of these & haven't had a single issue so far. I am sure there would be many more who like me who have had similar good experiences.;)

Still, the user reviews of SSDs with Sandforce controllers are lower than the ones with other controllers.

I bought an Intel 520 last year when I was building this rig and it worked for a day and went bad. I returned it and got a replacement, and it went bad in a day. They have a Sandforce controller that Intel spent 18 months working on and they still couldn't fix all of the bugs in it. It's not a performance issue, it's a reliability issue! There is no reason to buy a Sandforce based drive these days because they aren't ANY faster than the other drives out there. Sure you might be able to get one for $80-90 but did you ever wonder why they were that cheap?

Windows 7 will recognize it's working with an SSD and turn it off for ya. :cool:
