Solved SSD seems slower than I thought?

Just installed a 64GB Sandforce 1222 Solid State Drive. Installed Windows 7 x 64 Ultimate OEM on it, brand new. Added all the updates, and ready to go!

When I ran a "benchmark"...As SSD Benchmark, it is giving rather slow speeds.

Just wondering if it's because I dont have it in AHCI mode (I did IDE while installing), or if I did something wrong or what?

MS drivers are fine.

Is there updated firmware for that SSD?

Not sure, but I think ACHI is needed if you want TRIM enabled- somebody else will have to answer that one.

I'm getting ~230MB/s using HDTune for a benchmark on my puny 40GB Intel SSD (see specs)

I've read that alignment is a speed factor on SSD'sJust a few things to check out...

Well, I didn't have it in AHCI, got that fixed. I just thought that the read 4k's would be higher... It feels really fast though.

could be a SATA limitation here, but those are still rather fast real world speeds

The difference in speed between your SSD and the conventional HDD for large sequential transfers doesn't stun me. But I think most of the work gets done in the middle ground in term of packet size transfer and the numbers tell the story. I'm not surprised you say "It feels really fast though".

Most disk access is random size reads and writes. not sequential. An SSD will completely blow away most mechanical HDDs in this area, which is where you'll notice it (and thus it feels much faster than a mechanical HDD, because it is) - you're talking about seeks in microseconds versus milliseconds, which in processor time is a massive difference). You don't usually get blazing sequential speed on the SATA bus without much more expensive drives (although this is slowly changing), or replacing the controller with something better designed for SSD disks.
