Hi,

could someone please tell me how to configure my windows 7 firewall for a stand alone pc wired up to a modem.

i've attached in/outbound plus the firewall tab rules.

I've disabled IPV6 as my isp does not use it, i don't think. I'm on virgin media broadband in the uk but theres ipv6 rules in my core networking, core networking is also set to enable in firewall rules. should it remain on or off? also could someone advise rules so no one can connect to my system over ms network.

Hi and welcome to the forums .

Please could you fill in your System Specs in under User CP, it comes in handy for solving a lot of problems.

As far as I am aware if the modem is just outputting a standard ethernet signal then there is no extra configuration required.

In terms of security all you have to do is got to Control Panel>Network and Sharing Centre and make sure the connection to the internet is set as a Public Network (this may sound counterintuitive but setting the connection type to Public Network means your PC is locked down from any outside influence by any other PC on the same network.

what about core networking, do i leave that checked in the list in firewall or disable it. its currently disabled as there was rules in management regarding core networking i was unsure about.

i will fill in the fields in user cp

I think you should leave it checked and not disable it, if it doesn't work with it checked (which I highly doubt will happen) then you can always uncheck it later.

Is it this one? If so, it looks like that it has NAT, if it does - you don't need to be paranoid, just use Windows 7's default firewall settings.

One of the easiest protection options in your case is to simply set the network type, (you have a network as you are on the Internet, even though this is a stand alone machine), to PUBLIC.

This setting will set all the network options including the firewall to their most secure settings. With this and your NAT in the modem you should be secure :D

Excellent advice from Barman - this is what I have as set too.

Windows XP - Now Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit).
is vital to have core networking checked in w7 firewall for it to protect correctly or doesn't it matter?

What about settings within though, I had a look in management and some of them don't look good. allowing connections in when it should be blocked but I'm unsure whether to block it or not as it may be for something else

is there any way of one you pros checking them over for me please.
