Standard VGA Graphics adapter causing startup and resolution issues

I wonder has your Dad always used Avast ? .. It sure wont done any harm to Remove it .. But make sure you use the Uninstaller .. It can be found at the Avast Website .. I have seen some cases where it has strange effects with some Drivers .. Though have never seen any with Graphics Cards ..

Yep, I put Avast on there a few years ago when he got the PC; never had any issues.

Unfortunately, I will have to leave his now so won't get a chance to uninstall it tonight. Will try and get back here tomorrow after work and post back once I've done it.

Cheers for the help over the weekend maxie.

Ok, so I uninstalled Avast completely using the Avast uninstaller.

Still no luck, the new graphics drivers still show the error

Hi there ... Nearly out of ideas tbh .. One last try Download Drive Sweeper remove the Drivers .. Then try with the new Driver .. It is a very weird problem strange how it works with an old Driver but not great Resolution .. That is what i do not understand .. So just have to rule every thing else out ...

I think your graphic card is damaged. I had the same driver installation failure and yellow sign with my old PC's graphic card(Nvidia ge force) which caused boot problems, resolution issues and BSOD's. So I ditched it and went basic to generic VGA which solved BSOD issues but not boot problem. Resolution issues went on and off(sometimes I could change to Nvidia's resolution but often I could not). Finally, I just bought a replacement laptop.

I do not know about other brands, but apparently my HP's generic VGA's driver is not updatable.

Back at my parents today.

Maxie- I tried downloading Drive Sweeper but no luck as the latest version isn't compatible with intel.

Pappi - thanks for your post.

If indeed the gfx card is dead, how can I check which new one I can install? I think it's based on power supply?

The PC has a HP-D250 AA0 psu.

Would installing a new graphics card potentially work? The pc isn't used for anything but browsing/youtube/scanning the odd pictures.

Hi there ... Yes a new Graphics Card would resolve the issue ... Did you have one in mind ? Your PSU is not the best either .. I think your best option would be to pick a low profile card ... Once you start replacing one thing that could lead to other things .. So where do you draw the line never an easy decision ..

Well to be honest, the worst case scenario is that my dad will just live with the zoomed in resolution; I don't think he's willing to buy a new PC for it.

In terms of gfx card, just looking for something basic and cheap. Not sure how much power the pc can handle, but something like these (the first one actually has a question of it being used in a PB pc):

Before you spend on graphic card, make sure you can install it. The PC shop repairman I took my laptop to strongly advised me against graphic card installation for basically two reasons: First, it's a tedious long process. He quoted labor cost that I thought was prohibitive. Second, it's not guaranteed. Apparently it breaks down a lot. Then I went online and saw some videos on how to do it...and it looked like more complicated than by-pass surgery.

It does not take very long to Install a Graphics Card and the procedure is quite simple ....

Indeed it was simple, luckily it was a desktop!

The Card came today, installed it fine with the drivers direct from Nvidia, and it's working perfectly! At least the resolution is!

The actual gfx card fan is very noisy at all times. I'm thinking it may be a faulty card and may replace it. However, by getting this card it occored to me there really is limited space in this pc and I can't get one bigger than this one (the depth on this one is around 2cm) so getting a fanless card with a heatsink is out of the question.

May just exchange this for another or look for an alternative that will fit.
