Start Menu - typing program name is not working
Hi there,
I'm still new to 7, but for some reason when I want to type a program name in Start Menu doesn't seem to work or doesn't find the program.
For example typing this is
not coming up like on the screen below:
basically I get: Nothing found.
Is this something to do with searching preferences?
Thanks

but also typing appdata brings up some other search results and not like in vista where it takes me to AppData location straight away. WTF?

I've only ever done you're examples in the run command and not the start menu search so I don't know if it worked in vista or not. But in 7 it seems you'll need to open up run
i assumed the start menu search was only for jumping to programs and files like it said

You are using the RTM version? Because I don't believe "userpasswords2" is in the RTM version. At least I do not get it. However the run box works. netplwiz.exe is the same thing as userpasswords2 so try that.

You can use netplwiz instead of control userpasswords2 to open Advanced User Accounts.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for your reply guys. Netplwiz indeed works, however it's not all about this one. Like I mentioned in vista I could type "appdata" and it took me to my AppData without opening run.
Obviously I have to get use to it now... and yes my 7 is rtm 7600

Hi,
thanks for your advices. I knot how to run these things, I just want to know why can't I do it from Start Search in 7, that's all.
It obviously depends on the 7 version..

zYx,
Double check to make sure you have your Start Menu
Customize search settings are set to this below for the "Search" options.
When I type in
appdata in the Start Menu search box, I get this.

Ok, i've changed the search setting to Search with public folders as it was without public folders.
Now I get the same thing as you, but when I press enter I get Search Results...
What about you?
edit:
I was wrong. I got the same thing because I had a shortcut to Appdata on my desktop and that was it in search results. Now I've deleted the shortcut and when I type appdata in start search, nothing comes up :/
How about this?
AppData seems to be excluded from indexing and I don't know how to "include" it..

Changing your Search settings in Folder Options like below may allow it to show up in the Start Menu without it being in the Index. If not, then you will need to
add it back to the Index and
rebuild the Index .

Ok I set everything according to your screen and rebuilding the index now. Will take some time..
..but if AppData is excluded from index, it wont work anyway..
could you post the screen from your index settings please?

Yes, you would need to
add that location back to the index. AppData is a hidden system folder, so you may need to
unhide it before you see it as well.

It doesn't really matter, but you can close the window above and click on Modify again to see. It shouldn't be grayed out afterwards.

Sorry to be a pain, but I can't remember having it not grayed out and I only had 7 since tuesday.
Although, I added AppData and few more folders to be indexed. Will see what happens..

Yes it is, that;s why I am a little bit confused
Now, since I added hidden appdata to index, when I type appdata in Start Search lots of results comes up..
