Started having problems opening and saving PDF files

I thought for one second that I had it tonight. I deleted Java off my computer and ran the Stand Along program again and it found nothing. I downloaded MSE and it downloaded and saved to my download folder. I then downloaded SuperAntiSpyware and it downloaded but would not save. So I went back to the download folder to run MSE and it was gone. I don't know where it went, but it was gone. So I will download them at work and bring them home. This is really starting to suck.

It is frustrating. One thing to try, if things will download, instead of Save, try run instead.

My only other suggestion is to buy Norton Internet Security 2011, or 2012. This will give you the ability to use Norton Bootable Recovery Tool (NBRT) which also runs offline. Running a normal Norton scan might clean the infection, it is robust. Don't try to install Norton until you use the NBRT which you'll have to download and burn to disk or a bootable USB drive. Pick it up in a box from a Best Buy, Wal*Mart, etc.

   Tip
If you do get it, be sure to remove any other security with active protection first.

I have used NBRT 3 times to remove really bad infections when other people couldn't.

Be prepared for a few anti-Norton pundits to comment. ;)

Hi, ttralyor.

Let's see if we can determine what is happening. Please download DDS.scr by sUBs and save it to your desktop: Link

  • Double-Click dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
  • Shortly after two logs will appear, DDS.txt and Attach.txt.
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs.
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop.
  • Copy the contents of both DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs and post in your next reply.

Hi ttraylor, please follow Corrine's instructions. She has cleaned up tons of computers over here and in other forums, including mine several years ago. You're in excellent hands with her :-)

That will work, but you should have done as Corrine said, save as text file, zip it then upload. thanks for your efforts.

Well she didn't say that, but attaching the .txt files would be better. :)

Actually, no. I prefer not to open attachments and code boxes make the logs difficult to read in situ.

ttraylor,

The top portion of the attach.txt log is missing and doesn't show if you still have old versions of Java installed (previously reported: Trojandownloader: Java/openconnection.oi m).

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program. (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Please go here and run an on-line scan with the F-Secure scanner .

  • Use IE (Internet Explorer), accept the license terms, and allow the Active-X controls to load.
  • Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
  • If malware is found during the scan, check Submit samples to F-Secure and Automatic cleaning.
  • When the scan has finished, click the Show Report button and copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

It will be Monday before I get back to the office to make these downloads. A few days ago I checked my programs and only found one JAVA program (newest version) and I uninstalled it. I will download and complete both steps called out above. Today I received two Excel spread sheets from my Church and one movie of my grand children and I can't open any of them. Boy this is becoming frustrating. I really appreciate the help from everyone, thank you.

If you only saw the one Java program, I don't think that is the problem then. Although I could have missed something, I didn't see anything in the DDS log that would be causing the problem.

Are you able to run the online scan?

My Computer

I ran the scanner and it required me to download Java and by using the downloader on that site I was able to download version 7.0.10 but when I tried to run the scanner, IE just locked up and stopped working. I did a restart and tried again but the same thing happened. So at this time I can not run the scanner.

Question - I use AVG virus protection, I use Zone Alarm and I have a router between my Cox modem and my computer. Should I be making changes to this configuration in any way? I am just about ready to reformat and reinstall windows and I hate to do that but I just don't seem to be getting anywhere with a fix.

I understand your frustration ttraylor, but the infection may survive a reformat. It would be in your best interest to see if your can do the steps Corrine outlined.

A lot of people with Windows 7 have had problems with ZoneAlarm. You could try uninstalling it and using the Windows 7 Firewall and see if that makes a difference. (Uninstaller for ZoneAlarm, direct download link: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/support/download/clean.exe) Also, use the 32-bit version of IE9.

It also wouldn't hurt to run the System File Checker Tool to determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

  • Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
  • Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
  • If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
  • At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow (note the space before the backslash)
  • When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.

Note: If the tool finds any errors, run it again, followed by a restart.

I couldn't download clean.exe so I just uninstalled ZA under Control Panel/Programs & Features and then started up Windows Firewall and then restarted my computer.

I then ran System File Checker and it found no problems.

I tried again to download clean.exe using Firefox and it downloaded the file but then did not move it to the download file folder. I then tried to download it using IE9 and it did not work. When I went to "View Downloads" it said -This program contained a virus and was deleted - which is the same thing it says for anything I try to download.

I really appreciate all of the efforts that you have went to. Do you have any other thoughts?

At this point, I would cut my losses and do a full Windows installation. Save what you can to an external drive (including any other partitions that you currently use), and don't connect it to your system until after you've installed Windows and installed MSE. During the Windows install, destroy all partitions, create new ones, and do a full format. After installation, install MSE, then do a full virus scan of that drive before you copy anything from it to your system.

Does MSE replace one of the other programs that I am using or is it just one more layer of security?

All I run is MSE on all of my computers at home. That's what I recommend you run in place of everything else.
