Solved Startup delay with blank screen...

Hello friends,
This is my first post here
Its been maybe a month or 2 that i have installed my OS and A few days back i started experiencing this problem. Up till the welcome screen it takes about a minute or so. After the welcome screen there is a delay of 1min. The screen is black in color with a mouse pointer which i can move. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work. The welcome screen too stays there for about 20s. But after it starts loading the desktop it takes less than 5s. Total boot time now is 2-3min. Considering the system specs, i think it a a little too much. Here is what i tried:

  • Boot into safe mode: No problem, Boots normally without delay.
  • Disabled unwanted startup programs in msconfig.
  • Updated my graphic driver: Still experiencing delay.
  • Unplugged the network and boot: Still experiencing delay.
  • Run Registry Clean with CCleaner.
  • Full Scan with Kaspersky AV
  • Full chkdsk and sfc/scannow: No Conflicts.
Now my concern is that before a few days it just stood there for 15 min and did not advance towards the desktop, i was unable to boot normally. I booted into safe mode which i don't know how allowed me to boot again. Now i can boot normally, but i want to solve this problem before it becomes big.
I cannot find any reason to this problem. There are only a few programs on the PC with a handful of games.

I don't want to reinstall my OS again so i hope you guys will help me.

Did you go into misconfig and on that first tab click the diagnostic startup option, and then reboot? Does it do the same thing? I had a similar problem that the only solution ended up being a complete reinstall. Can you remember doing anything differently that might have caused this problem?

Did you try a system restore? I would also suggest not running registry cleaners as they have a potential to break things if you aren't careful. Startup programs and automatic updates (updating from many programs including microsoft update) can potentially slow it down.

Thank you for your support DustSailor,
As you said i booted into diagnostic startup and did not see any delay, it loaded very fast. Just to inform you, that now even in normal startup i am not experiencing delay but in the boot log there are still these

Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\vga.sys
...
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS

Looks to me like a driver issue, i will start trying to diagnose what is causing the problem.. :)

To add, there is nothing under problem devices. Also i do not see any yellow triangles in the device manager.
I am downloading the latest drivers from the nvidia as well as the gigabyte website and will manually update them, then see if the problem persists. Now i have 2 questions:

  • Should i try reinstalling/updating my drivers for this problem?
  • If yes, Do i need to uninstall the previous drivers and then install the new ones?

Hi,

Usually it Ok just to install an updated river over the top of an older one.

Just to check something : when you run full chkdsk, did you specify the /f switch?

Regards,
Golden

No. I just now came to know that it will fix the damaged files. I will give it a try.

Definately, if it boots quickly in diagnostic startup, than you might go into msconfig again and into the services and startup tabs. you're supposed to enable half and restart to see if its slow, and than a little more and a little more until you find which slows down the computer (In services, you'll want to click the check box "Hide all microsoft services".

Your Graphics card looks like it really needs an update, and NDProxy is part of windows. I think windows update deals with that one, though I'm not positive. Oh, srv.sys is part of windows also (You'll want to update drivers before you start re-enabling services and startup item)

Thank you for all the quick replies,
I found out that when i booted into diagnostic mode it automatically disabled my kaspersky av service. Now when i re-enabled it i get the blank screen delay again and also

Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\srv.sys

So i guess, that service is causing the problem but i don't know why. My question is why is the AV causing an issue? It is supposed to solve them.

Anyways i could not get access to the computer as my family was using it so now i am going to update all my MB drivers + the VGA drivers and see what happens.
If you have any ideas, you are welcome to share them.

Suggest you uninstall Kapersky then install MS Security Essentials to use with the excellent Win7 firewall - kept auto-updated. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Run like this for awhile to see if it works better. Hopefully it solves the problem with the kernel driver.

Ok i will try this now...

is the system still slow as you described in the beginning, or is it just that you've got some interesting missing drivers?

If you'd like a visual view of your boot process, consider using xbootmgr (and perhaps uploading the files here for review if the data is overwhelming).

There is no doubt the boot speed has improved but my boot time is still around 1-2min. I still see the blank screen but now for a lesser time. There is no affect on system speed as i said, after loading to the desktop the computer works like a charm. The only problem is booting.
