Hey guys,

Running Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit and having some problems with startup programs. Google Chrome and Mozilla Thunderbird are still starting up every time I login as I can't seem to find where to disable them?

I've tried msconfig.exe, they don't appear in ccleaner and also can't find them int he registry

Any ideas to solve this would be appreciated.. cheers

Nick

Hi MrLamby, welcome to the forums :)

This may sound like a silly question so please bear with me...

Have you tried looking under Start -> 'All Programs' -> 'Startup' ?

Nothing in task scheduler either.. only thing remotely related to Google Chrome is the Google Software Updater... but not Chrome or Thunderbird..

I think I can distinctly remember doing something in control panel months ago that had me typing in the programs exe location which then let it start up on startup.. but it was months ago and memory on it is a bit vague. But I still can't find it in the registry or anything..

Have your tried Autoruns? You don't have to install it. You can run it live in your browser (link in right column.)

Documents and Settings doesn't exist in Windows 7 does it? Mine goes C:\users etc..etc.. and can't find startup folder?

Autorun didn't find it either...

The registry RUN entries are

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Might also want to look in the RunOnce entries while you have regedit open.

One that often gets missed in windows 7 x64 is

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You're running 32 bit so you likely won't have the third one. I would expect any entries in these keys to show up in msconfig, but sometimes strange things happen in windows.

Any chance of using system restore or have you exceeded your available restore points?

What do you mean they run at Startup? Do they open on the desktop? If not then they are not running any more than usual when not opened.

If you dont' have Google or Mozilla Updater in Control Panel or msconfig>startup, then uncheck MS Services in msconfig>services and you will see what is running. It wouldn't be anything other than the Chrome or Thunderbird Updater unless those browsers are open on your desktop.
