I have several programs such as AVG, Setpoint, Comodo firewall and Steam set to automatically start when i boot Windows 7. But nothing ever starts up... I have to manually open each one. I went into msconfig and it shows all these programs are in startup. I have 64 bit if that makes a difference.

Type services.msc in the start search box. Take a look at the programs and make sure they're set to 'automatic' ... right click on the service and choose properties to see how they're set

Please do not use AVG and completely uninstall that from the machine.

I have fixed at least 30-40 machines with it in the last week alone that had bsod, poor performance and a ton of more issues.

AVG is the scourge of the internet and worse than an actual virus.

Disabling it only, will not help.

Use Autoruns from Sysinternals - the Logon tab should hold entries for the programs - are they ticked? Uninstall AVG though.

Yes Autoruns is great,. but more for the power user.

You can get in trouble if you uncheck the wrong box.

The whole point is to see if the boxes are checked in the first place.

I'm just saying if he messes around with some other settings,. that could get him in trouble.

There's a ton of information in that program:)

I believe I have fixed the problem... I've restarted the computer about 6 times and everything works like it should. The problem was UAC, I disabled UAC after installing a bunch of programs. My gadgets no longer disappear, my programs are starting up, my quick launch appears now and Iam able to install programs I was not able to before.
This time I did a clean install of Win 7 64 bit ad immediately disabled UAC before installing anything.

You can either leave it on or off... but you gotta make your decision right after a clean install. If you decide to turn off UAC later on you are going to have a bunch of problems on your OS.

UAC is still left at default after I freshly reformatted this laptop. Every app works fine. What programs are you using?
