Startup Programs

It seems as though I saw a post here somewhere, about a Windows update pertaining to startup items that don't start, but I couldn't find it when I needed it, so I used StartupCPL to move the programs that were in the Start Menu's Startup folder to HKLM instead. For the most part, this solved the problem, except in 3 instances.

First, Process Explorer no longer opens minimized, but in a normal window, which then has to be minimized to the system tray. Irfanview keeps opening, even though it is not listed among any of the startup programs (displays the icon for UltraMon). and last, SpeedFan starts, but then never appears in the system tray, even though it is set to. I have to shut it down with the Task Manager, and then restart it. Even though it then appears in the system tray, it disappears a bit later. This last problem might be fixed by reinstalling the program, but I haven't had time to try that yet. But, what about the first two items...any solutions?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that UltraMon is set to run from HKLM, but it doesn't.

You might check all the different registry locations in METHOD FOUR of the tutorial below to see if that may be able to help find where they are and where you could add one to work or not.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Is that the best place for them? As expected, Irfanview is not listed in any of those locations. Any idea of why it would be starting up automatically?

Personally, unless the program adds itself to whatever location it does by default, I like to have them in the Start Menu Startup folder. It really just depends on where you would like it for it to run at startup for only the current user, or for all users.

You might check the Start Menu Startup folder to see if Irfanview is there. If not, check in msconfig (Method Three) to see if it may show it's startup location.

I agree that the Startup Folder is preferred, and is where I have always had them...until now. Are you aware of any Windows Update that pertains to startup programs not starting properly? I checked in msconfig, and Irfanview is not listed there either...strange behavior!

Strange indeed. I'm not aware of any updates that may cause this. You might see if uninstalling and reinstalling Irfanview may help.
