Stereo Mix enabled but not working

I'm trying to get the Stereo Mix device under Recording Devices to actually broadcast sound, but I can't seem to figure out what's wrong with it.

It's enabled, and even set as a default device. I also can't seem to get programs like CamStudio to record the sound even though the option is enabled. Another example of my problem is even though I have a video open in ManyCam, it won't broadcast the video's sound, although I can still hear the sound from the program itself.

This computer originally came with Vista, and none of the above worked then, either.

I've tried updating the driver from this link: Realtek High Definition Audio Codec (Windows Vista / Windows 7) - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

But with no luck.

I just purchased HP Pavilion p6510f and it has this realtek codec as well. Enabled the stereo mix which was disabled as default and I am having the same problem. When I play a song or anything, no green bars going up and down on the stereo mix.

I updated my drivers already and read articles upon articles. There doesn't seem to be a solid answer yet. Anyone have a fix for this?

Just to clarify... you have it enabled as the default "Communications Device".

It's not set as the defalt "Record" device.

That's why you're not getting anything.

I managed to figure out one way to get it to work, but it won't work if you have headphones plugged in.

Right-click the sound icon by the clock and go to Playback Devices. Right-click Speakers and go to Properties. Switch to the Levels tab, and unmute the Microphone.

Piece of cake. This is what I did. Simply go to the other devices present under the Recording tab, such as internal and external mics. Go to their properties and make sure that for each of them the "Listen to this device" option is UNchecked. Now, get back to the Recording tab. If you had previously set Stereo Mix as standard device, it will no longer be show as unavaiable. If you hadn't, do it now so it might work - I had, so it was working when I unchecked the device-listening box of external mic. Have fun.

I had the same issue with REALTEK not working & I followed the steps given by NICKJ92, UNPLUGGING the HEADPHONES & it WORKED !!!! Thanx a lot NIVKJ92 for your helpful advice in the matter.

Here's a better solution than unplugging your headphones (and waking up the house):
Open the Realtek HD Audio Manager (the orange-red speaker icon in the system tray).
Double-click on the 'front panel' jack picture (usually the green round one).
You should get a list titled "Which device did you plug in?". Change the selection from "Headphone" to "Front Speaker Out". Now the system won't recognize headphones being in use and will output the stereo sound to them anyways. And you will be able to record using Stereo Mix.

Got it working in Windows 10 also

Same system should work: Set recording with Realtek stereomix, playback with Realtek speakers, and shareware Reaper program, all at 16 bit, 48,000 Hz to get them to work together. Microphone option worked, but tinny. My system was trial-and-error, and delivers Reaper rendered wav or mp3 at 320 kHz quality from live internet radio stream (used Tunein Radio this time). Audacity worked automatically when RECORD started - listening and recording set with Realtek speakers. Good luck!
