Still not able to print on networked printer

Computer #1 - Dual boots with XP Pro SP3 and Windows 7 RC1 7100 with Konica Monolta 2400W printer attached via USB and shared.

Computer #2 - Windows XP Pro SP3.

Computer #2 Sucessfully installed networked printer and prints normally when Computer #1 is booted to XP. When computer #1 is booted to Windows 7 it automatically detects and installs networked printer once network was correctly setup but gets error message when trying to print.

You need to have those printer drivers installed on the Windows 7 machine if you want to print from it. It see's the network printer but without the correct drivers installed it won't print.

If they don't make printer drivers for your printer and Windows 7 you are out of luck.

Of course you can always use the network folders to slide the document over to the XP machine and print from there.

Drivers???

I am able to sucessfully load drivers to all machines but the only available drivers are for XP. I can print from windows 7 to the printer attached to the 7 computer but I am not able to print from a networked XP machine. Does anyone have any ideas to try??

Hi all

I've posted this topic so many times -- but here we go again.

(Mods perhaps a sticky here for Networking Printers)

I've posted on this before but to share Printers attached to XP computers with either X-64 or X-32 versions of W7 is SIMPLE. These instructions are for the Printer attached to the XP machine (but works in reverse as well).

("Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW).

assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE.

1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

2) On the Network Browsing on your W7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.

Now on the W7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the W7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

4) Create NEW port==>Local port

5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

6) Now W7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.

Simple

(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.


If the printer is on the W7 machine and you want to print on the XP machine then do the same instructions on the XP machine --
port name in this case will be \\W7MACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

Thanks for the post, I did read it before though and I still cannot print. I followed the directions and now the printer is installed but I was wondering if there is something else I need to do. When I print something on my remote PC I get an error message (see attachment).

Jimbo45, appreciate that you are trying to help but your instructions do *not* work in reverse... I have a printer attached to my windows 7 computer and my Windows XP computers will not print to it. The problem is with the drivers; I cannot load the drivers on the Windows 7 machine because they are 32-bit and the Windows 7 OS is 64-bit. If I attempt to add the printer on the Windows XP machine and install the drivers locally, the Windows XP machine won't let me install them. It's very frustrating, and if anyone has an idea on how to get this to work (allow my Windows XP computers to print to my Canon printer that it attached to my Windows 7 computer), please let me know!

It will usually only work if there are actually printer drivers made for the Win 7 machine which is usually not the case. It will not work on a 64 bit machine if there are no 64 bit printer drivers made for the machine your trying to print from.

Printer manufacture's would rather have you purchase another printer everytime a new Op system comes out.

There is of course another way to do this.

Just use the network sharing folders to slide the file you want to print over to the machine with the printer hooked up to it and print from there.

Works everytime for me.

Dell never made any 64 bit drivers for my Dell printer so I use my XP 32 bit machine to print from.

I did this, but my Windows 7 PC says 'Access Denied'.

I too have had issues trying to print across a homegroup network from a W7 Home Premium x64 to a W7 Pro' x86 with a USB connected HP 1600. Have downloaded W7 drivers to each machine and I also attempted Jimbo45's solution to no avail.

I found under 'Printer Properties' Security Tab on the host machine that the permissions for 'CREATOR OWNER' did not have a tick in the 'print' box. Once ticked I am able to print from the remote machine.

I was able to do it: share W7 printer on XP machine

Hi, all. I just succeeded by following the instructions above from Jimbo45, except instead of "local port" I chose "LDR port". It gave me two fields to populate: in the top one I put the machine name of the W7 computer, and in the bottom one I put the name of the shared printer. (Note that I still have the software CD from the printer, which is Epson Stylus Photo RX500.)

Thank God -- I've been messing with this stuff for weeks now, and it was easier to get my Macbook to share files and folder with W7 than to get XP to do the same!!

Thought I would post. I too had major issues with this - I have Win7 64 computer with Canon printer (via USB) and was trying to connect a XP laptop to print. Trying to install 32 bit drivers on the W7 wasn't possible due to errors. I could also not connect via \\server\printer. I also attempted Jimbo45's solution to no avail.
Howerever, below worked like a charm and was super easy! (note - I don't know if my Canon drivers were there by default, or if I added them by prior unsuccessful attempts when installig the 32 bit drivers on XP.

I followed your instructions and they worked until step 5). When my XP systems goes and looks for the diver it returns the error message - Logon failure:unknown username or password. I have no password protecred network. What is the program looking for?
